    • That's a curious choice for a backdrop...I didn't realize Moz was such a big Hugh Grant fan.

In a Q magazine interview a long time ago Moz mentions him, but he didn't seem that impressed with his work.

  • First of all, forgive my mistakes – English isn’t my first language.
Morrissey’s concert in Codroipo was definitely a very elegant show, his voice was good and strong, the songs, as far as I can judge, were accurately performed by him and the band. This was the first Morrissey’s concert for me… I admired his theatrical attitude and the ability to charm all of us. Self-deprecating pride, suffering intelligence, being sensitive and cruelly witty… an interesting mix of all these aspects. A very attractive man in a way. Not so many fans there, so the devoted ones were easily able to stand in the first rows… if the people in the back were static, those in the front looked ecstatic…
The best moments, in my opinion, were Pigsty (a dramatic rendition, very appreciated also by all the people who aren’t really into Morrissey’s music, I still remember the moment when his voice rises saying “and I’ve been shifting gears all of my life”), Still ill (big surprise!), Panic (but I think the audience was happier than him in singing the song), First of the gang, Let me kiss you, In the future (sounded better on stage than on the record). He changed some words in You have killed me (Pasolini is me,… ? is you, and something more like that).
A bright yellow shirt thrown to the people in the centre… the band wearing the blue T-shirts of the Italian football team, who have just won…
Not a lot of dialogue: “thank you for leaving your plastic seats”, a reference to Julia, the football championship, an ironic remark about The Smiths before singing Still ill, and a “thank you for listening” which sounded sincere and not rhetorical almost at the end of the show… plus, someone gave him a book in a blue wrapping…
My impression was that Morrissey was more focused on his singing rather than on the audience and the setting (a beautiful park in front of a Venetian Renaissance palace… many of us smiled in seeing O. Wilde’s image on the front of that ancient, sumptuous building)… it looked as if he gave an introverted rendition of the songs… surely this isn’t a fault, but in Italy (insn’t the place he chose to live?) some of us were expecting some more “empathy” and passionate involvement (no Italian words, except for a “ciao ciao”, bye bye, at the end)… but I am sure that each of us had their perception about it… in the last days I was in a particular mood (i. e long-lasting relationships decaying, questioning people’s loyalty, “nice” stuff like that) and probably I watched the show with those eyes… and my inner state of mind was “expanded” by the concert atmosphere, rather than soothed…
I hoped that Morrissey knew he was in Pasolini’s homeland, not very far from the villages and the places that gave him the inspiration to start his career as a poet and writer… Pasolini’s figure is obviously linked to Rome, but this Italian region, Friuli, was his starting point… well, I hope someone told him of that… it seems that his last album -and other past songs like First of the gang, just to make an example- are very close to Pasolini’s themes…
One last thing: I brought flowers but the security crowd didn’t allow me to enter the place with them… you could carry heavy stuff but not flowers…I insisted, even after the show, to have them delivered… all the security boys said “morrissey has explicitly banished flowers from the show”… ok, ok, but is that true?? I felt a little stupid or naive… mostly disappointed!
Anyway, an evening to remember… more for the intimate feelings (which is a lot to me) than for the frenzy or general sympathy…
Thank you, Morrissey, and thank you to all the gentle and not very noisy people who were there because that music is part of our lives… cry and joy.

  • "Welcome to the museum!"

Nice place for a concert but what the hell were the chairs for?? Maybe one reason for the very calm crowd. Morrissey: "Thanks for getting up from your plastic chairs. I'm sure you don't need them."

I congratulated my neighbour (I'm not an Italian) for the world championship. Morrissey: "And congratulations for...ah, you know what."

Morrissey announced Still Ill: "This is from back in the old days when I was in...A-ha." I think I was the only one laughing.

He got a present from someone out of the crowd. He said: "What is it? A book? The Little Prince?" I whished he played Suedehead after that.

When introducing the band he said: "To give information to the police after the show, this is..." Again just me laughing.

After the show someone gave me a little piece of the canary yellow shirt! Thanks again!

A nice and different evening. I thought I would come home wet from sweat and tired as usual, but this was the most relaxing of my Morrissey-concerts. But it was a great evening for me and I hope for all the other rather quiet people too.

Ciao for now, hope to see him again on this tour...

  • And reason 11: You've ruined one of my favourite Morrissey songs, because every time I listen to All The Lazy Dykes now, all I can think of is some whiny petulant prick whining on about some other sad moaning arsewipe. Why don't you both do everyone on this site a favour, and meet up to resolve your differences with a fight to the death / mutual suicide pact, or preferably both.
