I heard it through the webcast. It was hard to understand what was said between the songs because the radio guy kept saying stuff in Spanish. I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero Now was dedicated to Syd Barrett. Moz also said something about Ringleader reaching #47 on the Spanish chart and "for others it's crap, but for me it's bliss" - or something like that. After introducing To Me You Are A Work Of Art, he said something like "and I don't mean Whistler's Mother." The crowd was silent and then he said "Julia, they don't know Whistler's Mother. That Spanish education..." After the song was finished, he said something like "Forget what I said about Whistler's Mother, you don't really need to know it."

That's all I remember... it was a good show. I guess/hope someone recorded it. I would've if I had any idea how...

  • Its offical Benicassim is a music festival for people who dont give two fucks about music. We booked our tickets because of the line up, mainly for Morrissey in my case as it was a birthday present... but when we got there we were surrounded constantly with gap-year students, pill-heads, crusties and to be blunt complete idiots who would push their way to the front and then turn their backs to the stage and gawp around looking for their 'friends'. Very few people seemed to be there for the music.
I dont know how but I managed to make it front row for Morrissey and he seemed just as pissed off with the place as we were - and we DO know what Whistler's Mother is! and I dont mean the resturant bar in Glasgow. And who smokes a spliff halfway through his set?! Urgh!!!
Sorry this really isnt a review at all, but if you really want to enjoy live music DONT go to Benicassim!!!!

  • Benicassin was not the festival you are explaning , now there are more non spanish than spanish people.. that is the reason why i'm spanish and i prefer see morrisey this year in paris rather than in Bennicassim festival..too many people and hooligans.. i would like that the festival could be again like in previous years..anyway , i saw morrisey concert in live through spanish tv, and that beginning was great! hang the dj!

  • Well I enjoyed it for sure.... many of you obviously think that everyone should not do drugs, drink loads etc etc at a festival... Well different strokes for different blokes and leave it at that.

Um as I can speak a bit of Spanish and went out on occasion with at least two different groups of Spanish guys and girls, I think you'll find it wasn't just the British indulging.... I must admit I do find it galling that some of my compatriots (not the person I was with I hasten to add.... nor the majority of folks I met from britain, although ) were occasionally at their xenophobic best and admittedly extremely ignorant as you should always respect others. And make an effort to learn some of the language at the very least. "2 beers mate" is hardly appropriate behaviour.

Anyway regardless I was there for the festival itself and Moz for me wasn't the best act of the weekend though he was highly entertaining. I was about 6 or 7 rows from the front, I met some lovely Spanish Morrissey fans as well as others from different parts of our continent. For me the problem is that Moz is not a stadium/ festival act per se but he seemed to be enjoying it. Anyway I did my rudimentary singalong to every song, with my newly acquired Spanish companions. It obviously lacked the intimacy of an indoor venue but come on people MOST people there were there to see him do the Smiths songs, whether you like it or not.
But good on him dedicating a song to Syd Barrett.

Anyway best act of the weekend for me were The Editors, followed by Depeche Mode and Madness (Sunday was a great evening... but i missed Art Brut which was a shame. Oh and Coldcut too)
I enjoyed the Pixies (though does anyone know what actually happened for them to go off stage for seemingly half an hour? conflicting stories abound) Echo & the Bunnymen, Nada Surf and Franz Ferdinand.
The Organ were disappointing, The Strokes were just crap (as I always suspected) and The Rakes?!??!! I believe LCD Soundsystem closed last year, which would have been more appropriate.
Oh and the silent disco....ha ha ha

I think the reason why a lot of Brits were there was it due to there being no Glastonbury.

I will go back next year but um I won't be camping again. I liked the vibe and peoples' friendliness personally... and Valencia is a beautiful beautiful city. the new architectue there is astounding. And I mean astounding. And all those gorgeous buildings in the old centre... what a city, it was a pity we only had a full day to explore afterwards. Anyway I'm off to bed.

    Hasta luego
    BLUEBIRDS

(Hello to everyone by the way. hope you got home safely)

  • Hi.

I have returned to my hometown of Madrid. It's been almost a week ago.
The previous time I saw Morrissey live (the first, by the way) was back in 1997, in Battersea Power Station, London. So I had to wait nine years to see the man for the second time in Benicàssim. Just a few comments about the concert: I didn't mind he played so many recent songs, though I definitely missed 'Everyday is like Sunday', being the gig in a "coastal town that they forgot to bomb..."
I couldn't help crying the moment Moz started singing 'Still ill' and felt a little embarrassed when he sang 'How soon is now?' in that ridiculous spanish-banner-made kind of skirt. That's him: contradictory and genius as ever. He hasn't changed that much in nine years. I'm glad neither have I. I still think he's the best.

  • El comienzo del concierto de Moz....fue buenisimo...las primera 6 canciones furon explosivas y cautivó a los fans...llegando al climax con Still Ill...fue tremenda la lenta version de Life is a pigsty...enriquecida instrumentalmente.
