  • After so many years and concerts, finally a handshake from the most wonderful poet alive today and in my own home town! For me this was the perfect night....center stage, front row with wonderfully kind people around (particulary the boys from London...I really enjoyed talking about the English Premier League with a Londoner...good luck in August with Arsenal and their new Croatian striker). During "In the Future When All's Well" to be shaking Morrissey's hand as he sang "I thank you..." wow...what a moment. All those drives listening to Smiths tapes and Morrissey CDs in my car and then to have a personal minute (well perhaps just a bit longer than a nanosecond) with him was so inspiring.

This was also my niece's first concert ever at age 11 and she drew Morrissey a picture which he took during "Disappointed" and stuck in his pocket! Here I've been circling the globe since the 1980's and after many years I finally get my dream concert and my sweet niece gets it at her very first show...absolutely brilliant. The ONLY person at Norfolk to top this ...was the painted man who got on stage, kissed Morrissey, then dove back into the crowd untouched by security! He had "Trouble Loves Me" tattooed across his chest but tonight he managed to avoid it....what a night.

  • ONE thing that irritated me, was the method used for letting people into the show. There's a restaurant in back of the club. If you eat there, they'll allow you into the club 15 minutes earlier than the people obliviously waiting outside in the heat. Not only that, but there are three levels of Early Tickets. If you had a reservation before 3pm, you got a dark blue ticket. If you had one before 5pm, your ticket was light blue. Late diners and walk-ins received a red ticket. The dark blue ticketed people were first in line and so on. Still, while all this is going on, the devoted Moz fans are still queuing up in front of the club. So wrong. It was rare that they were told about the restaurant tickets too. People didn't want others knowing. Some Englishmen in town for the show enlightened us about the restaurant tickets and we were able to get some that were light blue. We ended up in the 2nd row. I know second row sounds terriffic, but I was the second person in line to see Morrissey early that morning. I should have had my pick of a stage spot.

Earlier in the day, while we were all waiting on line, talking and making friends, Baby Jeff White and Kristeen Young began coming and going from the venue. It was HOT today. Kristeen came back from wherever she'd gone with a bag full of bottled Lemonade. She handed them out to four or five people in line. I was one. I said, "Oh, that's so sweet!" She said, "It's hot."

Two tour busses pulled up and Arturo and Ed started acting suspicious. After much shifty-eyed communication using walkie-talkies and such, the band emerged from one of the buses and walked right into the front door of the venue, waving as they went. Boz sure has a pleasant face. Jesse is an intense guy.

This made us all focus on the other tour bus. Arturo and Ed were still acting weird, so we assumed Himself was in that bus. We stood there for about an hour just gawking at it... then we heard Morrissey singing from inside the venue! Sneaky devil. It turns out that he'd entered through the restaurant behind the venue... The one that was giving out early bird tickets. One fan reported to me that he was wearing a blue suit when he arrived. I was also told that he rolled his eyes at everyone. I don't know if it was in jest, or what. I assume it was. You know him. He has to work some kind of negative joke into everything.

I had been talking with the bartender at the restaurant earlier. She had never heard of Morrissey (!!!), so she was baffled to report that he had been "trying to shut down the restaurant" all morning. Why? They serve meat and their cooking fumes are known to fill the backstage area. Morrissey was aghast, I suppose.

Fast forward to the show. Kristeen was great. We were very close. The stage was small, so Morrissey was fairly close to us at all times, as was Kristeen. I took TONS of photos, which I'll post soon.

You know, I'm always shocked at how attractive Morrissey is. He took the stage and my heart skipped a beat. You'd think I'd be used to his pretty self, but no. It always shocks me. I don't remember well enough to post the setlist, but I know he left out some of my favorites: Dear God, Whatever Happens, Plea, etc. Also, here's a weird thing: He played At Last I Am Born, which is probably my least favorite Moz song. Bummer. Well, at least he looked gorgeous singing it. :) (The man is inhuman with the beauty! Jeebus!)

He wasn't in the best mood. He wasn't in a bad mood, but he just wasn't the lovey dear that he sometimes is on stage. He seemed a little prickly and irritable in a smirky way. (From following him around a bit this tour, I think I've decided that he's one moody fellow. Big surprise there, but now I have first hand evidence.)

There was a little girl in front of me who handed him something. That was nice. I was worried about this child, however, because the first few rows were very rowdy. At one point I was nearly torn to bits because someone tried to give

  • I have seen Morrissey five times (dating back to the Kill Uncle tour), and last night’s show was by far my favorite. Morrissey’s voice, the band, the venue, the scope of material – it was all perfect.

I was actually surprised by how good his voice was given his recent illness. The way he sounded on Letterman leads me to believe he was already sick before his appearance there. (On a related note, on first listen, I thought All You Need Is Me is a much better song than That’s How People Grow Up.)

I have to disagree with “Scarlet Ibis” about Morrissey’s mood. I thought he was in great spirits. In fact, the ovation from the sold-out crowd was so great when he took the stage that he shook his ear monitors and actually laid down before the first song was played. And the crowd was singing along the entire night – not just on Everyday Is Like Sunday, Girlfriend In A Coma, etc.

I would add for Scarlet that Morrissey targeted Madonna because she appeared on the Live Earth concert on Saturday.

For me, the highlights of the night were Disappointed, National Front Disco and the encore, Last of the Famous International Playboys. And his voice on Please, Please, Please was probably the best I have ever heard it. Life Is A Pigsty is not one of my favorites (live or on CD), but the Auld Lang Syne outro and segue into How Soon Is Now were brilliant.

A night I will not soon forget!

  • The House of Blues offers a hotdog buffet prior to showtime. Does anyone have tickets who would be interested in trying to convince the venue to provide veggie dogs? I know this won't force the venue to discard all its other meat, but at least it will give some people options and make them happy for that small gesture. Morrissey has been through a lot since he's been in the US of A. It's quite embarrassing. I lived in Germany for 3 years and traveled throughout Europe. My soul remains there and when I see how people have responded to his experiences throughout his tour thus far, I get sad and I know that my soul is certain to remain overseas. I can't wait to share that little tiny bit of Life with him the evening of July 21st. I hope it will be nice for everyone there. I'm currently living in NC and if anyone needs a ride to SC, simply email me :)Take care.

  • Found this on TheMusicSlut.org: Following successful shows in Boston and Norfolk Morrissey's US tour is back in full swing. With that in mind we are delighted to announce rescheduled dates for Philadelphia at The Mann Centre on the 23rd of July and Atlantic City at the Borgata on the 24th of July. It has not been possible to reschedule shows at New York's Madison Square Garden, Holmdel, New Jersey's PNC Arts Centre, Northampton, Mass's, Pines Theatre or Baltimore's Ram's Head as despite our best efforts those venues are not available during the remaining tour period. It is hoped that we will be able to add a US leg to the tour this fall and that we will be able to play all of the above cities. In the meantime anyone holding tickets to those 4 shows should obtain a refund at the point of purchase. The tour continues this week with shows in Knoxville,TN; Clearwater, FL; Boca Raton, FL and Orlando, FL. http://musicslut.blogspot.com/2007/07/morrissey-di ehards-boycott-letterman.html [blogspot.com]

  • Let me say this about the topless girl.

HER SHIRT AND BRA WERE NOT -- NOT -- RIPPED FROM HER BODY.

    I was right there,and I know.

Here's how it went: she took off her shirt and bra, and then threw the shirt onstage to Moz.

She was topless (and braless) for at least 2 - 3 minutes before the shirt was thrown.

THINK ABOUT THIS: How many Moz shows have you gone to where someone's shirt and bra was ripped from them in a struggle? None, right?

The entire shirt thing was a fabrication. When it was thrown, about 4 girls and 2 guys got a good hold of it as it was coming down, and she was NOT one of them.
(She barely got ahold of a small part of the shirt AFTER it was down...) She kept screaming that she'd thrown her shirt and that his shirt was for her.

Wow, how stories change the more they're told. It was NEVER around / on her body, not even close.

The girl was batshit crazy. Did you hear her screaming foul things at Moz BEFORE the shirt throwing? I rest my case.

  • Last night's show was definitely the best i've ever been to. By the end of the night my voice was almost completely gone. I do agree that the "reserve at the restaurant, get in early" thing is very disappointing. I was outside for much of the day and about third in line, which i dont mind doing at all. However, the reason people stand outside all day long is to be as close to morrissey as they can and that was denied when all the so-called VIP eaters were already in there.
Anyway, I thought Life is a Pigsty was absolutely epic in live form. I was also so incredibly happy to see Disappointed and Girlfriend in a Coma. I ended up with 2 pieces of his first shirt and boz's guitar pick. But, after hearing what people lowered themselves to do to take a piece of his shirt, i'm definitely shocked. There was obviously a lot of tugging and grabbing for the shirt that i got a hold of, but someone eventually pulled out his keys, cut off pieces for the people around and that was the end of it. I also thought Morrissey was in a great mood, and very happy and pleased to be interacting with the crowd. Great, great show.
Also, i think it's safe to say i now have a big crush on Kristeen Young. Her performance was absolutely amazing.

  • Besides the chaotic and strange method of the reservation dinner dilemma (from the restaurant attached to the venue), the show was a GREAT memorable one indeed! Moz appeared as always elegantly dapper and good looking and the boys in the band were sharp as ever.

I was so enlightened to be able to shake his hand during First of The Gang! What a feeling!! I have been to numerous shows in the past while up front and never experienced the grace of holding his hand. Those gracious seconds seem to last forever and that is bliss.

His voice sounded much stronger than when I had seen him in Vienna, VA. It was a shame we missed him in Baltimore. Last night at the Norva...Morrissey was brilliant!! The band was strong as always!!! Look forward to seeing him in SC!

Oh, I must not forget –– kudos to the guy who got on stage, hugged Moz and stage dived totally untouched by security!

Great show once again...Love You Morrissey!

  • Brilliant show. I was thrilled by the enthusiasm of the crowd as well as Morrissey's. He sounded and looked great.

I was a little annoyed that the shirt struggling pushed me way back into the crowd behind three giant men where I could no longer see during the encore..My boyfriend got kicked in the groin by a small girl struggling for a piece of it. Anyhow, we ended up with part of the purple shirt (still smells like cologne).

Although the Baltimore show I planned on attending won't be re-scheduled, I think that this show was brilliant..amazing..and highly satisfying. Wolf Trap was great, but this was so personal it was almost scary.

Did anybody notice Boz say "F-cking bastards," under his breath as he came up to the crowd and looked onto the gang of mozlovers fighting over the first shirt he threw on the right side of the stage? I wasn't sure what to make of this!

Also, cheers to the girl beside me who got Boz's guitar pick because it landed on her chest!

  • What a great show. Since there wan't an aftershow, I can't say "What a great night!" Some people bashed the Cafe for letting people in what turned out to be 5 minutes before the general public. I wouldn't. If you went to The Norva's site, there was information letting you know about the deal with the Backstage Cafe. The Cafe turned out to serve decent pub fare and drinks, and it was reasonably priced, which was a shocker!

After we ate at the Cafe, we went around front and you could totally hear the "closed" soundcheck through the closed front doors of the theater! They sounded great. And we ran into the crew out front. If you see Charlie, the stage manager, please wish him a happy birthday as it was last night!

As a doubter, I must say Kristeen Young was phenomenal. You can't really understand someone's act when viewing it through a video screen and an internet connection.

Boz was just casually walking through the middle of the Theater at 7:30. I was the only one who walked up to him. He seemed surprised to be seen, which surprised me because he was walking through the middle of the venue!

Show was killer. Moz didn't take any chances on the high notes, but still gave it everything and went through 4 shirts. Jesse was all super-serious and crazy into it, Boz was incredible and the rest, and the one dude who jumped up onstage is my new hero. Here's what made it special: he jumped up, kissed Moz on the cheek and stage-dived right back into the middle of the front rows before security knew what had even happened. Questioned backstage at the Cafe after the show, the security guard stated that he had been working there every concert for the last 3 years and that is the first guy to get away with it scot-free. Whatever! Thanks Moz! Happy Birthday, Charlie! See you in Baltimore (I know it's gonna happen someday).

  • Moz's comments during the show were pretty standard and his added lyrics during the songs pretty much the same as the rest of the tour, e.g. "And he stole from the rich--which is you--and the poor--which is me--and he stole all hearts","And if George W. Bush doesn't bomb you, then I will see you", "Fox News hands them stardom".

Kristeen dropped the comment bomb of the night, saying the last time she was in Norfolk, she was 12. Her parents had driven there to visit the 700 Club, and she actually met Pat Robertson, who I believe she called the "satanic leprechaun"! She claimed she had almost forgiven the crowd for that. Good stuff!

  • my buddy Mickey and i drove down to Norfolk mid-afternoon to see Moz at the Norva, one of the greatest independent GA concert venues left on the east coast (Rising Tide Productions rulz), pictures from the show on my myspace page comments section, taken by Mickey

we got in before everyone except Julia, it was a pleasure meeting her and chatting for a few inside the empty venue, she took her place stage left as usual, i was lucky enough to be front row and center, well-placed for a shake of Morrissey's hand, though he spent more time on the left and right sides of the stage shaking hands for the greater part of the evening, i'm not complaining in the least, especially when i have the pictures to evidence the evening, including the shake!

seeing Moz from that prime spot was a dream come true, but one i doubt i'd repeat, after he threw his shirt into the crowd, which i gladly didn't risk my life to reach for, i saw the true nature of some of his craziest fans, selfish to the core, what Moz rails against, it's astounding what people go through for a shirt! after that, people wouldn't stop pushing and trying to sneak to the front, fine it's GA, try to get up front if you can, but you better be polite about it and stop shoving elbow space, especially when those of us who were there first have been on our feet solid since 6:45, through the fantastic opening act that is Kristeen Young (yes, i was the one that brought her 6 bags of Sour Patch Kids, she loves 'em and deserves fun snacks for the road, met Jeff White outside the venue around 5 or so too, really nice guy and excellent musician as well), i can't help but deliver disdain at people who forgo an opening act as good as this, just to sneak their way close to Moz, guess it takes all kinds

back to Moz fans, i remember meeting some nice people at Wolf Trap after the show, they showed me the Moz shirt they caught and told me about their adventures following the tour, but when they told me they rushed the stage for front row seats they didn't pay for when the lights went out and caught something like 57 or so Moz shirts over the course of the tour, i had two reactions:

the first was surprise and being somewhat impressed that they managed to do all that

the second reconsidered the information, and i was disgusted that they basically stole spots people paid for (difference between $100 orch pit, $60 general orch, $20 lawn seats at Wolf Trap, i had general orch seats and stayed there) and that after 57 or so Moz shirts, they wanted more, they weren't satisfied, they wouldn't want to give some other Moz fan a chance at one of their own

it is at this point i realize why Moz has more respect for animals than humans, when an animal is hungry, it eats it's fill of what it needs and it leaves well enough alone, it won't attack other animals unless provoked, it doesn't want more food than it needs, but humans? we're the worst beasts of all, nothing makes us genuinely happy, full or complete, if it's one Moz shirt, we want more, if it's meeting Boz, we need to meet Moz, etc. just tragic the truth of humanity

on a more positive note, i stood next to Timmy for most of the night, the one who successfully rushed the stage, kissed Moz and jumped back into the crowd, what a way to go!

i'm surprised others didn't take advantage of other attempts at the stage to have a go at it, with some organized effort, i'd figure more people could get on stage than they realize, then again this would mean Moz fans would have to work together instead of selfishly "i'm the only one that matters" against each other, that'll be the day...

that being said, it was wonderful to take in the show, hang out afterwards, got to meet Boz and thank him for his playing (but he's not up for being a go-between for gifts for Moz, totally understandable), even Jesse was hanging outside the van till 12:30 or so, never saw Moz come out, he either left right after the last song - like Wolf Trap, or jumped into the band van as it turned the corner to pick him up backsta
