  • Only 3 new songs (and one was a cover). Still, it's nice to see this charming man back in the lineup after all these years....

  • According to the FIB site, Morrissey should have just wrapped up 15 mins ago. So i doubt that This Charming Man was played. Morrissey didn't like playing that song when he was a Smith; I doubt he'll want to play it now.

  • No sé que concierto habreis visto, pero la última canción ha sido How Soon Is Now. This Charming Man? Ojalá. Ha sido un concierto horrible.

    Moz did not played This Charming Man tonight in Benicassim. How Soon Is Now was the last song of a boring show. I'm sorry, but it was

    Alas it is never to be. I'm looking forward to Years Of Refusal and continue to enjoy Morrissey being on the music scene, despite being more indifferent to Ringleaders.

    Just once though I'd love for him to announce a mini stupped down tour, almost an acoustic set. Just to try somthing different. Then he can continue doing his own thing, as he usually inevitably does.

    Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free...
  • Well, personally I don't think that This Charming Man is much of a tune. But it's the one that will follow Morrissey forever and forever.

    You mention "The Smiths" to somebody and they immediately get a flashback of Morrissey doing that silly campy dance with a bunch of daffodils. Charming this and Charming that. I get the creeps when I see guys doing that gyrating-hip dance in indie discos.

    It is debateble whether his solo stuff is better or worse - but at least it's different.

    'Ask'
    'First Of The Gang To Die'
    'That’s How People Grow Up'
    'Irish Blood, English Heart'
    'I Just Want To See The Boy Happy'
    * 'Sister I'm a Poet"

    'The Loop'
    'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores'
    'Why Don’t You Find Out For Yourself?'
    * 'What She Said'
    'Death Of A Disco Dancer'
    'You Say You Don’t Love Me'
    'Stretch Out And Wait'
    'Life Is A Pigsty'
    'How Soon Is Now?'

    Oh, and it was really a great concert. Cheers!

  • I went to both Saturday and Sunday shows and I must say I enjoyed the Benicassim one more. They were equally good performance-wise, but the crowd seemed to be much more into it on Sunday, probably because its average age was lower and due to the presence of lots of English fans.

    In Madrid the crowd was a bit dead, many of the older fans standed there like zombies which doesn't contribute much to the experience. I don't mean to tell fans who have been seeing him for 20 years how to act, but showing a bit of emotion wouldn't hurt. He is, after all, a pop-rock artist with very danceable songs. The shows would gain if people acted accordingly.

    Also a pity the level of spoken English of the spanish fans is so poor, it was a bit annoying to hear people singing along butchering moz's lyrics and pronounciation.

    However much I loved both shows, I maintain that Morrissey could do much better with set list choices if he wasn't so self-centered. Another thing is the quality of his musicians, I don't think he's surrounded himself with the best players lately. This is visible in many songs of the set, that don't really live up to the recordings in my opinion. Death of a disco dancer, TLOTFIP, pigsty, that's how people grow up, sister i'm a poet come to mind on this point, in relation to these shows. I guess the fools calling for johnny marr during his gigs do have a bit of a point.

    He was wonderfully bitter and cynical as usual. Lamented Benicassim not being cruelty free, having 'death for sale' in the food stands. He told the crowd how all spanish popular music is crap, but for them not to worry as english pop was just as bad. Mocked the spanish 'matador' institution when talking about the animal cruelty issue.

    Unfortunately he didn't sing ITMAA Paris on either night, I was really looking forward to hear it live. At least I heard What she said on the second night.

  • Speaking from experience, ( I used to live in Spain), Spaniards are arrogant people. They are very self centered. That is why they make no effort in trying to speak real English. In addition, it is this small minded mentality which makes them reluctant to ending the bull fights. This Spanish tradition is a barbaric and ridiculous display of human stupidity at the cost of a poor helpless animal.

    You need not be a vegetarian to sympathize with those who oppose the bull fights. Any one killed or harmed by the bulls deserves it.

  • I was there and he definately did not play this charming man. The show was very similar to the previous one at O2 with similar comments about meat and Morrissey left the stage dragging his shirt along like a dog exactly like at hyde park. The band were topless the whole time, each each with writing on their torsos, although i cannot remember what was written.
    The reception of the crowd was mainly positive, although the general consensus among non-fans was that 'How Soon Is Now?' was great, but he had embarassed himself by making comments about meat and that it was hypocritical to condemn a festival that he had played at and attracted crowds to.
    My highlight was when Morrissey challenged the crowd to name the band he was about to cover and, torn between shouting Spandau Ballet and the real answer, I screamed "Buzzcocks" and he looked right at me, pointed to me and replied "buzzcocks".
    The lowpoint was definatley Chirstopher Pooley's abominable trumpet and accordian playing which butchered 'I Just Want to See the Boy Happy' and 'Why Dont You Find Out For Yourself' respectively.
    All in all a very good show and combined with Leonered Cohen's stunning performance, left me emotionally drained for days.
