  • The old word for Prague means loosely 'ford' or 'threshold' but became more associated with 'castle' over the centuries - pictures here http://www.prague.net/gallery/prague-castle/ [prague.net]

Possibly Prague's most famous writer Franz Kafka wrote a book called 'The Castle' in his bleak style, about life's untraceable immovable oppressions. English author Alan Bennett constructed a satire based on the Czech's character called 'Kafka's Dick'. Some might dismiss it as a cock and bull story, but others praised it as a fair and funny dig at airs and graces e.g. this from http://10thplanet.thegreenwoods.net/production/production.asp?page=kafka.xml [thegreenwoods.net]

"The action of this surreal and irreverent comedy begins in Prague in 1919 with the dying Kafka asking his friend Max Brod to burn all his manuscripts. Brod, however, ignores these instructions and posthumously publishes all of Kafka's work as well as writing his biography.

We jump forward to present day where Kafka aficionado Sydney and his wife Linda are sitting waiting for a health visitor to remove aging Father from their genteel suburban dwelling. Their pet tortoise is running amok in the garden and the doorbell rings. At the door is the long dead, highly acclaimed Kafka biographer, Max Brod. He has accidentally urinated on their tortoise. When Linda goes to the kitchen to clean the tortoise, in a neat reversal of a distinctly Kafkaesque metamorphosis, it suddenly turns into acclaimed (and also long dead) Czech novelist Franz Kafka followed closely by his larger than life father, Hermann K. It is with this routine set up that Alan Bennett begins Kafka's Dick, a play both exploring the life of Franz Kafka and, some what inevitably, satirising the English middle classes..."

While such information may feel like a trial to certain readers who may be wishing hard for my metamorphosis, some correspondence, beyond their mere presence in the city of Prague, between Morrissey and Kafka has been observed previously - http://www.mactonnies.com/people.html [mactonnies.com]

  • Great Set List (Score:1, Interesting)

I think that the current set list is much better than at the beginning of the tour, I Just Want To See The Boy Happy and Please, Let Me Get What I Want were beatiful surprise. And You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby (one of my most favourite songs) with The Loop were higllights of the night.

Morrissey said after first or second song something like "It's the first time I am in Prague, because I was never invited, which means that people in Prague are very intelligent...(and he continued, but I don t remember exactly what he said,. but it whole was very funny).

There was no stage invasion and I didn't even get a handshake (which I so wanted), but the show was very good.
