  • I've just heard the MP3s and the singer sounds a bit like M (no denial) the musicians....hmmm, dunno about that. I've also checked the video of them playing HSIN? they look awful on stage.

  • Tried to book them once for a Smiths/ Morrissey tribute night in Soho and I wanted The Smyths to play however, the manager told me they wouldn't come for less than £1.500...I said, nevermind then...it's gonna be vinyl a go-go.

  • Just because their guittarist can't play 'This Charming Man' faster than the Peel Session version it doesn't mean they're all bad.

Ready with ready wit, still running round................
  • It would seem that the same anonymous person has nothing better to do.

As for the Soho booking comment, I remember you asking. The money asked for was considerably lower than £1500, I think you will find that £1500 is the standard fee for another certain tribute band. The Smyths do not ask for such a high figure or even half that figure and always are reasonable and support tribute nights and low profit making nights with very reduced fees.

From what I remember you only wanted to pay £150 but your night never happened anyway and I suspected that it was a myth as I checked with the club you said you were going to stage it with. It was apparent that it was a fishing for information excercise. It is a shame that people resort to such tactics but we do not fear the spiteful words of a single person who is too ashamed to name himself.

Try not to be too bitter and find something to do.

  • Here is a review that was written about a Smyths gig at a venue called DeBees in Winsford, Cheshire a couple of weeks ago. The independent review was written by someone who had not seen the band before and had no connection to the band. It is one of several excellent reviews that have been written about The Smyths and can be read on the Smyths web site.

Saving this evening?s tribute night (after ?The Other Smiths Tribute? cancelled last week) are ?The Smyths?. Arriving in a haze of smoke and orchestral music, they are immersed in their characters from the word go. Kicking off with ?The Queen is Dead? and ?This Charming Man? it is clear that we've got very lucky with these guys. They offer an authentic and thoroughly entertaining tribute to the angst-ridden 80?s pop rockers, which holds the audience?s attention right through the 1 hour and 40 minutes they perform. The musicians in the band don?t draw attention to themselves in the sense that their playing is so smooth and flawless the listener doesn?t even need to consider it. They seem pretty content to allow Graham to hold the spot light with his sensational impersonation of Morrissey.
Sporting the quiff, the specks and a suit that becomes more dishevelled as the set progresses, Graham looks the part, but what is more astonishing is how expertly he captures Morrissey?s vocals and mannerisms. He brings exactly the right measure melodrama and sardonic humour to the lyrics of songs such as ?Heaven Knows I?m Miserable Now? and ?Girlfriend in a Coma?, his voice shifting masterfully from droll baritone to shrill high notes. At the same time, he is constantly moving and gesturing; often seeming on the verge of a swoon as he emotively throws his hands out to the crowd and then sweeps them over his brow. Many of their songs do in fact end with the singer falling to his knees or collapsing onto his back. Graham is a first-rate showman, bantering with the crowd between each song and encouraging them to loosen up and dance. At one point he sings a Smiths style ?Unhappy Birthday? to a young girl who is celebrating her 18th.
They play on till way past midnight, but the crowd still calls them back for encores. The Smyths close with great sing-along songs ?There is Light? and ?Big Mouth Strikes Again? and leave to a clamorous round of applause. After their stellar performance, Debees certainly won?t be bothering with any ?other? Smiths tribute bands in the future ? we have found the cream of the crop.

  • ...is the same person who sings on the infamous Melanie track.

    -Mark

Ps. He also thinks he is fronting a pop punk band along with the bass player, horrible stage presence.

  • an absolute tit. Has a really irritiating tendency to ad lib and do spoken word bits. He totally ruins How Soon Is Now by speaking ‘I am the son and the heir’ etc repeatedly at the end. Also ruins Every Day is Like Sunday with this horrible a capella ending. Guys, a request, you play the songs well but please stick to faithful renditions. If we wanted to hear musical improv, we’d go and watch jazz.

  • This was the fourth Smiths tribute band I have seen (others were These Charming men, SATH and The Salford Lads) and they were one of the best. Great mannerisms and sounded great. Lead singer does not look the part as well at Jose but a great show nonetheless.
