New interview on Smiths On Guitar I just posted an interview(my first!) I did earlier this year with Jules Standen, who was working at Matrix Studios when the Smiths recorded there. He discusses a lot of the recording process in-depth. Check it out here: Jules Standen Interview - Smiths On Guitar

The producer
He wasn't one for 'chit chat'
At one point the studio got a call from a mother of one of the Moor's Murder victims - he didn't take her call and was a little freaked out about the event.
The first session was very chilled as they were unknown - but after the first single broke it was my job to throw out journalists (like from the London Times) from the control room. (I enjoyed that!)
When Sandy Shaw turned up to sing on of their songs she flatly refused to sing a line (because it was "too rude") it later amused me to see her sharp turnaround / reinvention shortly after - backed by her own indie rock band... The producer talker her into singing it in the end - (but it took about 45 mins of persuasion)
A friend of mine who was in the punk band Slaughter and The Dogs told me Morrissey got his start in Manchester with long died red hair singing New York Dolls covers (...and whats wrong with that i ask you?!)
I am afraid, because he was so silent, I can give you no further info on him at the sessions. He wasn't rude - just tight lipped / silent.
For the record - I like the band and my favourite solo Morrissey song is "Last of the international playboys"
