Peter Hook was interviewed by Einav Schiff for Israeli news portal Walla! and shared his thoughts on Morrissey.

My rough translation of the Morrissey-related parts:

ES: There were other musicians in Manchester that weren't part of your scene, that you didn't really like. Morrissey, for example.

PH: Morrissey is just a very difficult person. Being in a band is a very competitive thing and you always fight for your place against a rival band. And as New Order, the Smiths were our biggest rivals. I do admire his talent and you must be stupid to think that he's not a great musician, but he's simply a jerk and he says that I'm a jerk, so we're in agreement.

ES: What do you think that he thought about Ian Curtis?

PH: Ian inspired him, I'm sure of that. Rob Gretton, may he rest in peace, told me that Morrissey was jealous of Ian.

ES: For his talent?

PH: No. Morrissey was jealous of Ian because he didn't have the guts to kill himself like Ian did.

  • He's a twat.
A year ago he come on dj'n Sinnersday "new wave" festival in Hasselt (Belgium), pulled his DJ set at nothing, just crappy commercial house stuff.

  • I liked New Order and enjoyed Peter Hook's innovative bass playing, but what a crude comment about suicide. People commit suicide because they are extremely depressed, not because they have guts.

  • Ian Curtis suffered from depression and epilepsy. He must have been going through unbearable pain. I hardly think Moz was jealous of that.

Is Peter Hook the one touring the Unknown Pleasures album? What a jerk.

BTW--I didn't know being in a band was competitive.

  • Evidently Peter Hook is still the same old, worn out individual with negative nonsence to repeat time and time again. Had it not been for Bernard Sumner, you Mr. Hook would've been left to scrounge and fourage through rubbish in the dockside of far east London for a living. Hearing your tired and dismal d.j. noise at the Casbah on India Street insane Diego, well, we left unimpressed. "Hang the d.j., the rubbish it constantly plays? It says nothing to me about my life". And this is the only way you Hook have a way of making headlines for yourself? Where are your new records Hook?? YOU are the Quarry now..Molly Mae Morrissey

  • Morrissey makes incredibly insensitive comments about people, and these comment by Hook are suddenly outrageous? Wow.

Morrissey fans appear to lack self-awareness.

Also, Morrissey would probably agree with Hook's suicide comment. Morrissey basically said the same thing about Kurt Cobain when he committed suicide. He admired his guts.

Moz is too narcissistic to truly consider suicide.
It's just wishful thinking on Hook's part, I think.

  • Isn't that the old saying? How many times have I read that Moz is a prick....countless. Is everyone full of shit or is there some truth behind it?
I have met Andy Rourke - very down to earth guy nice enough to share a pic. and sign a CD cover for me, same with Peter Hook - met him at a DJ gig and he was very nice.
Morrissey on the other hand - can't get close to the guy and honestly, not sure if I really want to. I admire the man for his lyrical talent and although I'm a Smiths fan more than his newer stuff, I'll admire from a distance - people can have their own opinions and I respect that, but sometimes the truth hurts. Never meet your idols.

  • 'I do admire his talent'

Well, you've all seemed to have missed the best bit. This is as close to an APOLOGY asyou are ever going to get from Pete to Morrissey. The apology could be with regard to something Pete said in a previous interview, a while back, which was totally stupid. But Hooky will NEVER learn to keep his mouth shut when he needs to do so!

Anyhow, the other stuff is just rubbish too - it's sad because Pete needs to look forward not backwards. Sad as it is - and Hooky knows it - JD have gone, NO have gone, Tony (or ANTHONY) has gone and there is no Factory any more. It's gone.

Hooky could (and did) play a great bass.

At times, his mouth is bigger than his brain, in a silly kind of way, rather than in any sort of vindictive way. That's the truth.

  • I think the only thing Morrissey meant when he said he admired anyone who could take their own life is that it is such a brave thing to do. It really does take guts - just like it does to be gentle and kind. People suffer and suffer, but can't bring themselves to end their lives because of what they may put their loved ones through, or perhaps because they are too afraid of what's on the "other side", so they go on living this empty life, always seeking help, but to no avail. And, I'm talking about people who are truly tormented and depressed. Ian WAS brave to do what he did. Let's not forget this is an illness - not a weakness. Sometimes we can't control what we do to ourselves - and Ian couldn't control it, and he couldn't live with the pain any longer. I don't think Morrissey's comment was cruel or insensitive. Quite the opposite, really.

What Peter Hook said IS cruel, however, and it sounds like he'd say anything to make Morrissey look like the bad guy. I mean, he's looking back some twenty years ago, and Morrissey is not the same person. Looks like Peter is lost in the past, and there's no hope for anyone who's lost in the past...

it's hardly surprising that he or anyone would find Morrissey to be a jerk- Morrissey is a total pain in the ass. idont think Hook holds any real grudge, he juste doesnt get on with Moz- fair enough. he does clearly respect him asa musician, juste as Moz probably mutually respects him (though he doesnt admit it- ive heard read Morrissey putting down Joy Division asa band). idont think he meant anything negative by saying that Morrissey was inspired by Ian Curtis' bravery to commit suicide- Morrissey has expressed admiration for the courage it takes to take one's own life- idont think Moz has seriously considered it himself, but knows he lacks the guts anyway (as would i).

idont think Moz would be offended by anything Hook said here and would likely agree fully.
