The Big Issue Interview — Text

Thank you again, Naomi:

The first "Maladjusted" era interview in print has appeared in the pages of The Big Issue (dated July 14-20),- odd Stone Roses type coincidences, anyone? As The Big Issue acts as a source of income for the homeless, I’m advising everyone who can to buy a copy. However, for those who can’t I’ve transcribed it below, basically because I’m lovely and everything (sort of).

Here is the transcript of "From Bedsit Land to Baywatch" that Naomi typed up. She also mentioned that there is something about Amy Lam's Moz convention in the same Big Issue. By the way, I have corrected the spelling of Amy's surname (it is not spelled 'Lame'). I thought her name sounded familiar and so I checked to see that she had signed the Registry back in Feb., so I'm assuming this is correct.

* Update - regarding July 19 post "Morrissey on ITV", it was a clip of the video, not a performance.

Morrissey in The Big Issue (England)

Thanks Richard Osborn for this news:

There is an interview with Moz in this week’s Big Issue. In it, he talks about the Joyce/Rourke case:

"I’ve never spoken to anybody about the case," he says. "Anything that has been written has been other people’s views so obviously I haven’t come out of it well. It was presided over by a judge who had no knowledge of the music industry. He had to have Top of the Pops explained to him. The whole point was get Mozzer. Get him in the witness box and grill him. It was horrendous. If I had any faith in the British judicial system before, I don’t now." he said. "His words could have ruined my life. But he wanted to do that because he knew the press was writing about it, and all judges want to be famous. It makes me feel that if you ever come up against a judge or have to stand in a witness box, the best thing to do is lie. Don’t bother with the truth."

Moz also says in the interview that he is feeling more at ease now and also that is looking for a house in north London with a garage!!!

From what I understand, The Big Issue is a weekly in England created by and sold by poverty-stricken/homeless people. Is that right? Well, regardless of who makes it, could someone pick me up a copy?

Morrissey on ITV

Thanks to Debi for this info:

...received e-mail from english co-hort that Moz appeared today 19 July on ITV Central’s "The Chart Show" at approx. 12:25 p.m.... Moz was performing "Alma Matters"... too bad it is not shown stateside.

(July 20) This is referring to a clip of the video being played, with the full video to be played the following week. Thanks again to Debi and also to Naomi for clearing up the confusion.

Morrissey/Smiths party in Belgium

From g.j.assink:

On Saturday 27 September at 22.00 H cet. a Morrissey/ The Smiths party takes place at the Limelight Follies in Antwerp (Belgium). Yesterday I got an invitation from some Belgian friends for this party and thought it could be interesting news for moz fans in this area of Europe.

Swedish newspaper article

Thanks to Christian Arvidson for this article (translated) from the Swedish newspaper (Goteborgs-Posten, July 17) about "Sorrow" not being released in the UK.

"Extraordinary Ordinariness"

Thanks Jeff Pelletier for this from Goldmine (A U.S. record collecting mag):

I just read in the new issue of "Goldmine" a Smiths book from Italy will be released this month with a unique 3 song cd.

the book's title is..." Extraordinary Ordinariness".

"Alma" reviews

From Barry: "Q online favorably reviews Alma Matters, including it’s b-sides!! The new NME negatively reviews the single."

Morrissey "Tribute" in London, July 18

Submitted by Naomi (thanks), original source Melody Maker (reprinted without permission):

MORRISSEY is to be the subject of a dramatic tribute on July 18th, which is set to climax with a mass of gay and lesbian Moz clones marching from the London ICA down The Mall to Buckingham Palace! Earlier in the evening, at the ICA, fans will celebrate the life and work of the great Mancunian misery in an imaginative variety of ways, as the hostess for the evening - Amy Lamé, organiser of the celebrated London gay and lesbian club Duckie - explains: "A lot of people seem to assume that he is gay although there’s no proof. I’ve loved Morrissey for over 10 years now. He’s never said anything openly about his sexuality and people are naturally curious. He’s never aknowledged his gay and lesbian fan base either, so it’s all in the shadows - which is typical of Morrissey anyway.

"Basically, I just wanted to organise a celebration of the man himself. We’re gong to get loads of glasses, hearing aids and plasters so that everyone can be made over to look like their own unique version of Morrissey. We’re going to have a hairdresser there to do the quiffs. We’re constructing a huge bed which is going to go in the centre of the club. Big sheets will be covering it, and people will be encouraged to get in the bed, roll around and have a little dream of Morrissey, and write messages to Morrissey on the sheets - after which, at the end of the evening, we’re going to fold up the sheets and post them to Morrissey.

"We’re going to have two performers - Tina C, who’s a C&W nouveau drag queen doing her version of "Suffer Little Children", and Michael Atavar, who’s from Wigan, and tells his stories from the North. I’m going to be doing a Morrissey quiz and Morrissey karaoke.

"What we’re hoping to do at the end of the night, once everybody’s been made over and looking the part, is to gather everone together with a bunch of rusty spanners and sing an a capella version of "The Queen Is Dead".

"The chances of Morrissey coming down are really slim. But my dream would be for Morrissey to do Morrissey karaoke as a pastiche of himself, in front of a video of himself."

Mentioned in August Q

From Alison Olcott:

...in the August Q, there’re 3 little items of interest (at least so far, I am only on page 43)

1. (and best) There are 2 pictures of Morrissey’s house in Ireland. The first is of his backyard, and has the natty "photographer crouchin’ in the bushes" feel to it. It’s of his giant swimming pool and green house. The second shows a giant, ivy covered mansion and a well cared for lawn. Nice...if anyone has 999,995 pounds and wants to buy it with me, get in touch.

2.Small picture of Johnny, who’s helping produce/co-write Marion’s new album.

3.In their "Great Pop Quiz ‘97" question 147 is to name all 4 songs the Smiths recorded for their first John Peel session, while 159 is what Smiths song did Morrssey play as an encore at his UK tour.

Maladjusted reviews

From Barry:

There is a SHORT (a few sentences) review of Maladjusted in the new issue of DETOUR. It is negative, but is written by someone who has never liked Morrissey because he can’t stand how "depressed" all his music is, so I found the review unconvincing. However, it does have a color picture of what appears to be the album cover—Moz in a yellow mostly unbuttoned shirt with his hand touching his mouth—not a flattering picture I thought!

Meanwhile, Maladjusted is the lead review in the new ADVOCATE—a quite positive review. Oh and TIME OUT London positively reviews the new single.

Poising and Posing

James Flowers would like to announce his new site:

"Summer days bespeake children, cracking open the patio door to lap up sunshine. We are not children nor do we want to frolick in our shorts (perhaps "manly trunks"!). Our jeans find comfort, lounging in the attic, unearthing the musty things that dwell there that we prize:

Ancient tomes, weathered scupture, tattered clothes and wilted flowers. I’ll drop the ladder: http://www.cyg.net/~bflowers. Ascend for tea and recline, dandy. What else have you got in mind?"

Mike Joyce in Mojo

From Naomi:

Johnny Rogan interviews Mike Joyce in this month’s issue of Mojo - he talks about the first and final days of The Smiths. I’m not entirely sure if that’s reason enough to buy it though... if Q is a magazine for the pensionable, Mojo caters specifically for the not-so-recently deceased.

"Sorrow" around the net

Thanks to Robert Wilson for the link to the "'Maladjusted' Readjusted" article on NME.COM (week of July 12). Natalie also let me know about a small report about the debacle on CyberSleaze (July 8).

The Late Show — rumor

From Chris Graham:

I heard a comment on Toronto radio station CFNY 102.1 about Moz appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman. Can you confirm this (possibly with a date)?
This may actually happen... I will post if I hear anything.

Turn up Maladjusted

From Piet Heijdeman:

I just received the August issue of Details. In the "Meter" (The Good, The Bad, and the Inexplicable "Turn it up/Turn it off") section of the music reviews our beloved Moz’ new album should be "Turned up"!...
Morrissey’s Maladjusted (Mercury)
Maladjusted? Morrissey? Now there’s a fresh concept. But give the guy credit: This is the nastiest album of a far-from-polite career.

Turn up this "Nasty" album!

Japan gets Maladjusted first

Miki let me know that the release date is July 30, as stated in 'Rockin' On', a Japanese music magazine.

2nd KROQ Interview — forthcoming

Within the next week, hopefully. Thanks to Melinda Hsu for beginning the long transcription process. RealAudio is coming, when I have time.

* I am going to halt taking registry entries on Friday, July 18. If you want to be included in the last update sign up now. I am looking at converting to a new database format, but that may take a while.
