The Smiths have 4,019,654 monthly listeners on Spotify.*

Morrissey has 1,731,479 monthly listeners on Spotify.*

That means that 5,751,133 people are listening to Morrissey's lyrics every f***ing month on Spotify!

You won't read this info on The Guardian's website, btw. Or on NME. Now why is that?

How long would it take to listen to everything on Spotify?

Tough to be totally accurate without getting track lengths for each track. So this'll have to do:

50 million tracks x 3:30 = 332.732029 years

It is interesting to contrast the top 5 cities for Morrissey and The Smiths Spotify listens.

Below are the Top 5 cities for listeners of The Smiths on Spotify:

  • Mexico City, MX
    152,565 monthly listeners
  • London, GB
    131,220 monthly listeners
  • Santiago, CL
    111,237 monthly listeners
  • São Paulo, BR
    109,956 monthly listeners
  • Los Angeles, US
    100,668 monthly listeners
Next are the Top 5 cities for listeners of Morrissey:
  • Mexico City, MX
    111,261 monthly listeners
  • Santiago, CL
    89,413 monthly listeners
  • São Paulo, BR
    44,240 monthly listeners
  • London, GB
    40,021 monthly listeners
  • Los Angeles, US
    33,592 monthly listeners
As you can see, there is a huge difference in London listeners. Over 131,00 monthly listeners of tracks by The Smiths in London compared with 40,000 listeners of tracks by Morrissey.

There is a similar drop in listeners between The Smiths and Morrissey when you look at Los Angeles data. There are more than 100,00 monthly listeners of tracks by The Smiths in Los Angeles, yet just 33,000 monthly listeners of tracks by Morrissey.

There are approximately 70% less people streaming solo Morrissey material on Spotify than are listening to content by The Smiths in both London and Los Angeles, arguably his two biggest (predominantly) English speaking markets.

It is also interesting to note that Mexico City and Santiago have a significantly lower difference between Smiths/Morrissey monthly listeners. Both of these cities have a drop between Smiths and Morrissey listeners of about 20%.

This data can be read as a clear indication of how many fans in English speaking markets (where Morrissey's views are much more widely reported and reacted upon) are choosing not to listen to his solo material.

There are 22 individual Morrissey albums listed on Spotify, including compilations and deluxe versions. In contrast, there are just 11 albums by The Smiths listed on Spotify, including compilations and deluxe versions.

The Smiths numbers are impressive but Morrissey's aren't particularly great, New Order get 3,896, 303 monthly listens and James get 1,583,538. New bands like The 1975 are hitting 7.5m.

What a crock of shit. So going by your analysis Paul McCartney’s or John Lennon’s politics is the difference or not between listeners of the Beatles and their solo stuff! Catch onto yerself before float away ye feckin airhead!

The Smiths is Morrissey! :)

5,751,133 Spotify users listen to Morrissey's lyrics each month!

The Beatles have 18,652,678 monthly listeners.

John Lennon has 5,989,341 monthly listeners.

f***ing James have 1.5 million listeners per month?! How?! Why?!

The Beatles have 29 albums listed on Spotify, including compilations and deluxe versions. John Lennon has 20 albums on Spotify, including compilations and deluxe versions. The lower number of solo John Lennon releases available to stream matches the lower monthly streams.

However, Morrissey has double the number of Spotify available albums of The Smiths (22 solo albums compared with 11 albums by The Smiths) yet his solo material garners less than half of the monthly listeners of The Smiths.

Your comment about Morrissey's numbers is daft, Surface.

Morrissey has 1,731,479 monthly listeners. Now, to put that into some kind of perspective, Miles Davis has 1,592,940 monthly listeners. John Coltrane has 1,777,972 monthly listeners. They are two of the greatest jazz musicians of all time.

Ok, here are some other interesting numbers:

John Lennon has 934,474 followers on Spotify.

Morrissey has 574,345 followers.

Johnny Marr has 70,442 followers.

@ the moderator my last comment regarding followers, should've said John Coltrane, not John Lennon. Could you change it please? If so, thanks!

The first google answer is 245 years so not far off. Tracks will probably get added faster than you listen to actually you could listen to new music forever .

Why is the number of albums relevant?

Morrissey should not be compared to The Smiths of course, but to contemporaries like Weller or Nick Cave and they have 500K and 1,6M respectively. So yes, Moz holds up really well as a solo artist.

If Morrissey is even with Coltrane, then he is doing well!
