How do you rate Years Of Refusal, now?

When I first bought it I thought it was the worst album he's ever put out, and I still do. Musically superb, can't fault the playing or recording, although, as with Ringleader, he's tending toward heavier, rock-ier tunes. Lyrically I think it's way below the curve. I still love him, and can't wait to see him live, again,..just hoping he plays more older material.

if you think that then go off to a U2 forum?
Theres rarely a rubbish Morrissey song out there!

Oh yes, there is. No, there ARE several rubbish Morrissey songs out there (but not on YOR!), all of use could name a few, just like we can name our favs. Being a fan doesn't mean that you have to  at everything he does.

ok and if morrissey jumps off a bridge, i think i will too

You totally should but don't forget go vegetarian first. And celibate. And grow a quiff. And wear the same glasses he used to. And like the music he likes. etc. etc. etc.

I think it's a very good album but I don't think I like it as much as Quarry or ROTT. But I think it's very different to both of them which makes it hard to draw accurate comparisons. I listen to it most days but Your Arsenal and SG are top of my Moz playlist at the moment :guitar:

I think it has held up nice since I first brought it on the release date..I must have listened to it over 50 times since then. I rate it a classic & in his top 4 solo albums imo.

And I'm happy to agree with you. :) But, each to their own. We are lucky enough to have plenty Morrissey albums to chose from.

I think I was being a little generous with a couple of those scores too!:p

"Years of Refusal?"

Pop drivel. Unabashed commercialism. The only Morrissey album I actively hate. This past twelve months would have obliterated my opinion of him completely if it were not for the amazing revisioning that is "Southpaw Grammar." With the new songs and b-side the album is remarkable, immediately shooting to the top quarter of his finest work.

Not as good as Quarry & Ringleader, but nevertheless a very good Moz-album

I liked it from the start and I like it even more so now. I don't think you can really compare it to other albums because it's so different.

If it was "unabashed commercialism" it wasn't particularly effective, was it? Anyways, I love YOR to bits and have done since I got it. The only dodgy tracks on there are Skull and Paris. The other weird thing with YOR is that seeing Mozzles sing it live has endeared me to certain tracks I wasn't overly fond of at first - Carol and OK By Myself being two examples of this. I don't remember feeling that way with previous albums. When I heard Finn was producing it I was hoping for a Quarry 2 and didn't get it, but was happy with the result and am still listening to it pretty much constantly.:)

Hey, give the guy a break. Relatively speaking, he only knows how to play a few songs.

Wow. That's passion.
Ah well. I'm glad we have freedom to our own opinions :thumb:

the music on YOR is generally stronger than the last two studio albums. there's nothing as melodically feeble as Father Must Be Killed, How Can Anybody Possibly Know, At Last I am Born or See You in Far Off Places.
thankfully the lyrics aren't quite as cringey as many of those on Quarry/ROTT either; thank heavens Moz has returned to the unrequited love theme (e.g. Paris, Black Cloud) and is steering clear of the embarrassing bluntness of kegs between legs, it makes me puke, being entered with a key, 15 miles of shit etc.
however, there's still way too much anger, clumsiness and humourlessness in the lyrics for my liking (e.g. Mama, That's How People Grow Up, One day goodbye).
I would say though that there are three brilliant songs in the 2009 batch; to wit, Shame is the Name, Not your Birthday, and When I Last Spoke to Carol.
there was only genuinely great song on both Quarry and ROTT but the Quarry singles had several fantastic b-sides so, for me, 2004 was a slightly better Moz year than 2009...

A nice collection of ok Morrissey songs.
But not a great album.

All of the songs sound great when they are played at random, but it doesn't gel as an album for me - probably because, as someone said above, they all sound too similar.

On page 1 of the thread, I said that. Pretty much word for word.
It' nice to have someone agree with me for once:thumb:

I very much agree with your top three :thumb:.

Whoever would've thought, a singer that would actually like to sell records.?What a BASTARD!

:lbf: :thumb:

I very much like it. Definitely in the top third of his albums. I love the louder Morrissey. Seems I'm in the minority.
