Morrissey A-Z: "Striptease With a Difference"

With two different finished mixes, and Morrissey talking about it in an interview at the time, this was
definitely at one point considered for release, maybe only as an album track when Bona Drag was in the works as a proper album. Thinking that when Bona Drag as a album (not compilation) was scrapped, so was Striptease. Of course it should have been a b-side, it really is a mystery why it wasn’t.

With the piano and bounce, it might have sounded too much of the same along side Palare, which is maybe why it wasn’t used as a b-side on that single.

Maybe with all the pressures for an album by the label, plans for touring, needing a band, it, like many songs were just
put aside.

Such original lyric, and love the sitar(?) like sound, can be heard better on the second (less piano) version.

It sounds more like squeaky keyboards (Fairlight Synthesizer) from the 70s or early 80s, which were not in fashion at all in 1990. Curious.

Yeah, can’t tell if it was synth or treated guitar. But yes, Fairlight
which is a kind of early sampler could have been employed.

Considering how short and slight Kill Uncle is -- like they barely managed to scrape it together --, it is indeed very curious how a track this good didn't get a chance. A funny song with a catchy chorus and witty lyrics, what is there not to like?

Isn't it the case, that all 3 versions are the same length and have the same lead vocals? The overdubs have been added here and there, best heard on the spherical "Fairlight synthesizer version", which sounds cool but doesn't want to fit in with the Madness vibes. A lot was really invested in this song.

Slight differences in track length, from PJLM:
  • studio outtake {3:13}
Leaked on the internet in 2004; this version starts with drums and a piano 'cascade'.
  • alternate studio outtake {3:11}
Leaked on the internet in 2006; this version starts with only drums.
  • other alternate studio outtake {3:20}
Taken from a record company cd-r of a scrapped reissue of "Kill Uncle", this version which starts with drums and a piano cascade, has leaked on the "Revelation" bootleg.

Very insightful, thanks. But is Morrissey's lead vocal take the same everywhere? Can you tell?

One thing noticeable as we're going through the Wiki is the loose use of dating (not only by Morrissey/credits, but external websites too).
A version of Striptease... on the withdrawn The Best Of Morrissey is attributed to the Viva Hate sessions (with photo evidence), which obviously confuses things.
Then to be made available (unsure if same version as previous) on the Kill Uncle reference CD-R thereafter (you know who you are - 'bout time you shared a FLAC rip of all 3:20 of it :) ).
So take your pick - one makes more sense than the other.
We need some more listening parties on Twitter and people primed to ask questions.

FWD.

Andrew Paresi is the man, who knows such things (and likes to talk about it). :)

As far as I can tell, the lead vocal is the same on all versions, it just seems to be the intros which vary, as per previous details provided.
I stand ready to be corrected by any higher authority, however.

Just noticed, the Revelation version (2009), which I have courtesy of this place, shows as being 3:12, not 3:20 as indicated on PJLM...unless it yet another version.

I got the idea of the same length because the two versions at the beginning of the thread both show 3:13 - 3:14.

Interestingly, if you go the the excellent work done by Dirtee Rephlex, in the 'Sisterama: 01. Viva Hate', 03. Unreleased folder, SWAD outtake mixes 1, & 2 are in there in .mp3 format, 3:11 & 3:13 respectively.

Probably based on this scan (or that they were in a similar place in the NHS):

Which is the closest to factual besides Stephane's information there is unfortunately.

Ach, in 1990 this would have been a wonderful little indie single fot the pop charts. Beautifully quirky British and the antithesis of the techno, house and rave sound, that had a stranglehold on Europe. Now, 31 years later, we nerds are taking the outtake apart and asking "What if.... had been?" I'd love to have an outtake boxset from September 1987 onwards. I'd get lost in it.
