Morrissey pop-up shop at Salford Lads Club for Manchester arena gig - Manchester Evening News

For once he will not be asking shoplifters of the world to unite.

Morrissey is opening a pop-up store - at Salford Lads Club .

Mozza merchandise will be on sale in the ‘Mpourium’ including limited T-shirts, vinyl, and his books for three days to coincide with the weekend that the singer is performing in Manchester.

Morrissey’s gig will take place on Saturday August 20th at Manchester Arena and the shop will open each day from August 19th to 21st.

Leslie Holmes, spokesman for the Lads Club, said: “It’s really great for us to have a link with Morrissey for the weekend and shows how important we are to fans.

“This weekend will bring a lot more visitors into Salford. It’s fantastic for us and for the city. We’ve had an amazing number of visitors recently with the Stone Roses concerts and last week’s festival at Castlefield Bowl.

“All these visitors bring a great deal of money into the city and we really appreciate the support of the fans who make the pilgrimage here. It’s a lifeline for the club and one of the reasons we have become such a success story over the last 15 years.”

The Club will also show an exhibition of fresh-faced Morrissey and Johnny Marr taken by fan, Colin Howe, back in 1983.

Inspiral Carpets’ Craig Gill will also be calling in with his Manchester Music Tour bus.

The show is Morrissey’s only UK gig this year and is part of an international tour for the former The Smiths frontman.

Morrissey will be joined by special guest Damien Dempsey - the Irish singer/songwriter who fuses folk and contemporary lyrics to deliver heartfelt songs with cutting social commentary.

SALFORD LADS CLUB AND FUTURE ARTISTS HOST MORRISSEY HAPPENINGS

Star date: 13th August 2016

EVERYTHING MORRISSEY ON OFFER IN SALFORD

As Morrissey return to Manchester Arena next week to play a home town gig, there's two Mozza happenings in Salford for fans.

Salford Lads Club is hosting an official Mpourium with t-shirts, vinyl and books on offer, while Future Artists is holding 'a pop up gallery of convenience' at the Home of Honest Coffee on Chapel Street featuring photos of Morrissey and The Smiths by Lawrence Watson, as Ian Leslie reports.

When a young photographer named Stephen Wright was hired to take pictures of The Smiths in November 1985, he was blissfully unaware of the iconic status the shots would acquire. The taxi to Salford Lads Club left him skint and with no other option than to walk home; whilst a youthful, if slightly forlorn, Morrissey regretted not wearing his new cardigan.

Unbeknownst to all involved a bond was formed that would endure for decades to come. The famous 'Lads Club shot was featured on the inner gatefold sleeve (ask your dad or a hipster) of the album The Queen is Dead. It has since become one of the most readily identifiable images of modern music.

The seminal shots of The Smiths outside of Salford Lads Club have helped to make the club a major tourist attraction and a Mecca for Morrissey's devout fan base. Although 31 years have passed since the two fates became intertwined, this alliance has not been severed. Whilst performing The Queen is Dead live, Morrissey has been known to reference the club in the lyrics.

The enigmatic front man has always had a hands-on role in how and where his work is promoted. Morrissey insists on all venues being meat-free when he appears. He is a passionate activist and even considered running for London Mayor to promote animal rights. It was fitting that last year he opened his first pop-up shop at Battersea Dogs Home.

It is a fitting and astute touch that brings the Morrissey connection back to St Ignatius Walk. Clearly, Morrissey feels strongly about the work and support provided by the volunteers at Salford Lad Club and is proud of this union, and after over thirty years he has directly reconnected himself with the club.

On 20th August he returns home to play Manchester Arena and has used the opportunity to open a pop-up shop at the Club. The shop will stock many items from Morrissey's popular Mporium range: t-shirts, vinyl and books will available alongside Salford Lads Club merchandise. Come along, take a picture and go down in celluiod history.

Meanwhile, Salford's Future Artists will be opening 'a pop up gallery of convenience' on the weekend of the gig at its Home of Honest Coffee on Chapel Street, a five minute walk from the Arena. It features photos of Morrissey and The Smiths by Lawrence Watson, many also taken outside Salford Lads Club, and follows a big recent exhibition at the Future Artists Studios next door (see previous Salford Star article – click here).

Would actually like to get my hands on a signed autobiography or vinyl but they'll probably be mega expensive and go straight away anyway on the first day.

Does anyone know if all of the signed stuff is going on sale tomorrow, or if they are staggering it over the three days?

Thanks.

They staggered them over the days at Battersea last time so presumably the same.

Due to the prices, I doubt the signed stuff will fly out of the door. £70 for a signed autobiography, or £70 for a signed copy of the Bona Drag LP. After £80 for a standing ticket to the gig, I doubt many will have that much to flush down the drain.

Wrong. £70 for a bundle. Either with signed Bona Drag LP or Autobiography.

Have any of you been to Salford? Or seen the work that Salford Lads Club do in the local community? Which the proceeds from this will aid...

You absolute whoppers.
