New Radiohead track

Gone to waste
Harry Patch (In Memory Of)
"i am the only one that got through
the others died where ever they fell
it was an ambush
they came up from all sides
give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
i've seen devils coming up from the ground
i've seen hell upon this earth
the next will be chemical but they will never learn"

Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.

It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget.

As Harry himself said
"Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims".

This morning the Today program played the song for the first time and now it is available to download from our website.

The proceeds of this song will go to the British Legion.

To peace and understanding.
Thom

I was unsure whether to buy it or not, as I find it quite difficult to sympathise with voluntary soldiers. However there are so many people who simply have no idea of the significance the two world wars (I was asked by another student in my politics class of all places "Did Britain and Germany have some sort of war?", and that's just one example) so I absolutely had to.

I don't know of any other band that would do this, very emotive and a great way to remember a life well lived.

i listened to this last night 3 times in a row. sooo pretty!
Haha, me too! Was transfixed with Thom's voice and the overall arrangements in general.

Definitely, I can't think of another group who could do something like this so sensitively and sincerely.

I honestly think, creatively, Radiohead are the closest thing we have to The Beatles.
They never seem to sit still.

I hate to agree with you, the lyrics are great however his voice sucks on this song. As for the Beatles I really don't think so. More like Oasis a one hit wonder band.

Radiohead is a one hit wonder band???

I guess in some sense they are, b/c their only super popular song is "Creep." but thats like saying that the Smiths are a one hit wonder band b/c their only real popular song is "How Soon is Now." would you consider the Smiths a one hit wonder band?

I meant to say comparing them to " the beatles" there not close. Sure they have alot of good stuff, but I would say their more like the "rolling stones" a few good songs and the rest of the album are fillers. As for "how soon is now", that's would be one of "the smiths" fillers. HSIN reminds me of "the cure" love song" hate it everytime I hear it.

No I'd say Radiohead are comparable to The Beatles, because of what they've both done for music in general, and how diverse/creative their respective back catalogues are.

For whatever it's worth, I disagree with a lot of that. I can't remember where I read it, but iirc, one critic characterized the Beatles as having had two lives: First, they were N'Sync. Then, they became Radiohead. I still think the Beatles are 'superior' to Radiohead, but if any band can draw comparison with the Beatles, I believe Radiohead is largely regarded as that band because of their innovation combined with talent just like the Beatles displayed particularly since Rubber Soul.

And the Stones may have been lazy later on in their career, but as to most of their career, I don't think your description applies. Their string of work from Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., just to name a few, are regarded as some of the best albums ever in rock history in those ubiquitous polls.

HSIN. Well, that's an opinion.

But Cure's "Love Song"... yes, nail on chalkboard, but none more so than "Friday, I'm in Love"...crikey, what were they thinking?

It definitely is Radiohead. And it's one of the best songs they've ever recorded. Everything about it is just perfect.

A very good time to be a Radiohead fan, nothing for two years and now three new tracks in a month!:thumb:
Honestly, much as I love Moz he really could learn a thing or two from this.
