I can hardly believe that these people "copied Shameless" as the papers reported.I did see the episode in question and it does bear some similarities.Ofcourse who knows what will unfold as the truth comes out ...but talk about life imitating art.Despicable people.Apparantley the Police Hunt cost five million quid!!Perhaps they'll take a tenner out of their benefits from now until eternity.

Excuse me, are you assuming they are on benefits?
Or does the  make it bittersweet humour?

I don't think she'd be smart enough to keep up that ruse for that long, personally. I find it all very odd.

Amazing what some people will do for money, if it's true that is.

Shannon Matthews' mother charged over disappearance

The mother of Shannon Matthews has been charged by police in connection with the alleged abduction of her daughter.

Karen Matthews will appear before magistrates in Dewsbury on Wednesday charged with perverting the course of justice and child neglect.

Karen Matthews, Shannon's mother, has been charged

Matthews, 32, was arrested on Sunday and allegedly broke down in tears in front of a police family liaison officer.

Miss Matthews has been accused of knowing her daughter's whereabouts from the start of the £5 million search for her, sources have disclosed.

The Daily Telegraph understands that officers are examining alleged similarities between Shannon's disappearance and a storyline from the Channel 4 drama series Shameless shown in the month before the nine-year-old vanished.

In it, the teenage daughter of Frank Gallagher, the head of a dysfunctional family, staged the fake kidnap of his youngest son, Liam, in an attempt to obtain a £500,000 ransom.

All along, Liam was hidden a few doors away with a friend of his sister.

The episode attracted 2.5 million viewers when it was shown on Jan 22.

Shannon failed to return from school after her a swimming lesson on Feb 19, prompting Britain's biggest ever search for a missing person, involving hundreds of police officers and members of the public.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that police are examining allegations that people claiming to be connected to Shannon's family asked for donations from the fund set up to find Madeleine McCann, the four-year-old who vanished from a Portuguese holiday apartment last May.

A spokesman for her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, said they had received "a number of approaches" for aid from the Find Madeleine Fund from purported representatives of the Matthews family.

The Daily Telegraph understands that Miss Matthews, who has seven children to five fathers, was arrested on Sunday as she sat in a police car with Det Con Christine Freeman.

Two of Miss Matthews's friends are also thought to have been present when Det Con Freeman asked Miss Matthews about alleged inconsistencies in her account of events.

One of the friends allegedly claimed that Miss Matthews had known where Shannon was throughout the 24-day search.

Miss Matthews allegedly admitted that she had wanted to leave her boyfriend, Craig Meehan, 22, and that his uncle, Michael Donovan - the man charged with abducting Shannon - had offered her a place to stay.

Miss Matthews is alleged to have said she intended to leave home but at the last minute "lost her bottle".

However, sources said she denied having an affair with Mr Donovan, 39, and had not asked him to take Shannon.

Police found Shannon on March 14 in the base of a divan bed in Mr Donovan's first-floor flat, a mile from her home in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Mr Donovan, who slit his wrists while on remand at Leeds Prison on Sunday, is awaiting trial charged with kidnap and false imprisonment.

Mr Meehan is in custody charged with 11 counts of possessing child pornography and will appear before Dewsbury magistrates on Friday.

Trust the Daily Torygraph to think this is relevant

I grabbed the first link. I see why it's political but it does seem like a big story. The child is hardly ever found alive and anyone that had any interest in the case deserves to know the outcome.

edit: Much later when people started having a class war I realized how clueless I was about your post. I didn't even get the significance of what you were saying there, and thought it was all about the newpaper itself, and not the number of fathers.

why all the fuss thers a simple answer lock her up; and give her young
kids a chance to find proper parents or they will turn out like her a sceeming bitch.

If it's all true then how daft are this family thinking they could fool highly trained investigators?
Social services were apparently close to taking the girl into care just before she went missing.
I'm more surprised the mum found 5 blokes to father her 7 children, then again if that stepdad was anything to go by then maybe not.....sorry couldn't resist.

I can't help thinking of this song...

"Six filthy children
from six absent fathers
and then you turn
to us for succour
because you think
we're just suckers
We may be welfare, oh yeah,
but we don't care
and we're paid to despise
your council house eyes

You can change your name
and you can bleach your skin
camouflage your accent
so that even you don't recognise it
But you won't escape
from the slum mums
because you are one
because you live and breathe like one
And the Labour government
can't stand the slum mums
It's ingrained
underneath your fingernails

The office of the
Social Service
is strategically placed
in a dowdy, rowdy part of town
to discourage you
from signing
We make you feel
as if you're whining
when you claim
what's legally yours

You can change your name
and you can bleach your skin
camouflage your accent
so that even you don't recognise it
But you won't escape
from the slum mums
because you are one
because you live and breathe like one
And the Labour government
can't stand the slum mums
It's ingrained
underneath your fingernails

Take you
and your rat pack brood
to the long grass of the meadow
administer seven doses lethal
and illegal
which may render
you elsewhere"

This whole episode makes me very cross...the police investigation has cost millions...and who was helping the people of Dewsbury who were the victims of REAL crimes when all this was going on? The police were all out searching for Shannon....

Is this the story of that girl lost in Spain? If not, whatever happened there? Last I heard the parents were being suspects.

True,
a debacle like that will just make people think twice when somebody near by has a REAL crisis or needs help...it just breeds general suspicion and wariness. Call me a cynic bit i think that's true, some folk just have no morals or conscience esp where money may be involved...they'd sell their own mums or kids.
Very sad to see.

She probably is. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, as long as she works as well.

BTW what is a Tory? Isn't it a politcal party?

Yes, it's the probably part I object to, people assuming a working class person, who has a 'disfunctional family situation' is on benefits. When they have no solid proof.

A Tory is member and/or supporter of the Conservative Party, The Daily Telegraph is widely seen as a Tory newspaper, :)

Do you think a woman like her should have the freedom to have 7 kids to 5 men in a civilised society?

Yes, we have no right to retrict a person's right to have a child.

Yes, we have no right to retrict a person's right to have a child.

Well no of course not, unless you live in China that is.
That said it's amazing how many people continue to have kids yet quite clearly don't want them, a mass of contraceptions or quite clearly not it seems.
..now there's a novel idea, birth control.
