The Smiths - The Best British Band Of All Time? - God Is In The TV
By Loz Etheridge

Excerpt:

Morrissey cuts a more controversial figure than ever these days, now well past the point where anyone could feasibly even attempt to defend his offensive comments or totally unacceptable views. He has been reported as having said some truly shocking things in recent years, which none of us in our right minds would ever condone. To that end, for the sake of this article, I would like you to imagine, difficult as it may be, that after The Smiths split up there was nothing but an eerie silence, at least from one quarter of Manchester’s favourite sons.

Instead, let’s go back to a happier time – a simpler time when we found ourselves punching the air in delight at the lyrical genius of ‘Mozzer’, marvelling at the seemingly very intelligent, eloquent but shy, gangly individual who was brightening the lives of society’s outsiders, and, indeed, sometimes even playing a part in some of those kids’ minds that hey, maybe life isn’t so bad after all – I’m NOT ALONE.

The Cure in '89 were amazing. Their Dublin concert in 2019 was good but felt diluted. Their problem is they became so popular that all types of skanks go to their concerts to be at an 'event'. I'm not a fan of open air concerts and The Cure would work better in smaller indoors venues. But I saw the Glasto concert on TV and thought it was ace. I know I'm off topic.
I think the criticism hurled at them at Glastonbury, and I thought this at the time, was they were heavy with album tracks and few hit singles. I’ve always like the cure, just gone a bit dull last few years. Also the lipstick now looks dreadful as well

Proto and Post cancel each other mathematically, so it's simply rock from a mathematical point of view.
A pedant writes:
not necessarily. 'Proto' means 'first,' 'original,' or 'earliest.' So they could be the first (i.e. proto) post-rock band.

It's funny cos my only criticism of them is that they play too many poppy hit singles and crowd pleasers. I'd prefer if they did Faith/Pornography/Disintegration in entirety plus a few bsides.

Their back catalogue is vast really, they will never satisfy everyone ..

A pedant should know that "proto" comes from From πρωτο- (prōto-), combining form of πρῶτος (prôtos, “first”), superlative of πρό (pró, “before”).

So it denotes something that existed before... i.e, the Sex Pistols can't be called "proto-punk"... Because they were the first punk band (or Ramones, irrelevant details).

So... My theory is correct:
If my Bloody Valentine is proto-post-rock, then "proto" and "post" cancel each other mathematically and it's "rock".

It's not semantics, it's maths!

Do you happen to know Ancient Greek?
"Proto" isn't "first", or it is, but with the condition of something that existed BEFORE that the X thing existed. A "prototype" is a good example! (Proto + Typus, which is that Latin for "Image, figure, shape")...

Same thing happens with the highly hypothetical Proto-Indo-European language, which denotes a language that may have existed before the Indo-European languages.

Considering that we agree with the meaning of "post", then I would say that "proto" and "post" mathematically cancel each other, just like "-1" and "+1", thus My Bloody Valentine is simply rock. It's not semantics, it's maths (and Greek + Latin).

No I don't know Ancient Greek. We are speaking English and using English word definitions. By all means argue with Chambers if you wish but appealing to an essentially dead language to prove your point is desperate to say the least.

The prefix has the same meaning in mostly all the European languages... a meaning that is a loan from Greek!

Just like "Philosophy", "Filosofía", "Filosofía", "Philosophie", etc are loans from Greek in different language... thus a proto-post-rock band plays "rock".

Send me chocolates!

í've been spending some of my lockdown 'breaking up' with The Beatles. It's been alot of fun actually. And we are only at Day 13... 59 hours and counting; more to come ~

í wonder whether the Streatham Showbiz Smiths sessions sound as much fun...
