World famous Salford Lads Club photo of The Smiths leads new exhibitions as Morrissey’s UK tour sells-out

Iconic images of influential band continue to attract attention 20 years on

25 April 2006: Renowned photographer Stephen Wright is delighted to announce that a collection of his limited edition photography of The Smiths is to be featured in key exhibitions at the Manchester’s museum of urban life, Urbis, and the London-based Sony Ericsson Proud Galleries.

The most famous of the images was shot for The Smiths’ 1986 album The Queen Is Dead and features the band standing outside Salford Lads Club. The Smiths have been one of the most iconic and influential of British bands for the last 20 years.

At the time of the photo shoot, Morrissey said of the images: “A sweeter set of photos were never taken.”

The images will feature in the “0161” and “I love Manchester” exhibitions at the Urbis gallery in July and August. Many of the same photos will be on sale at the Sony Ericsson Proud Galleries in London in May.
This announcement coincides with the news that tickets for Morrissey’s current tour have sold out across the UK, following his latest album, Ringleader of the Tormentors, hitting the Number One spot in the UK album chart.

A limited edition run of 100 of the images of The Smiths, measuring 16 x 12 inches, each signed and numbered by Stephen, are being sold via the Sony Ericsson Proud Galleries in London. Sony Ericsson Proud Galleries' main focus is to expose the finest moments in music, fashion, film and sporting photography. These classic images of The Smiths are hand-printed by Stephen from the original negatives – negatives that have not left the confines of the brown envelope they were placed in 21 years ago.

Stephen said: “I am thrilled that Sony Ericsson Proud Galleries and the Urbis museum are displaying these images and that people are still so interested in them. When you start out in something like photography you have aspirations, but I never anticipated that some of my photographs would still be being talked about after more than 20 years.”

Stephen’s archive of rock and pop photography is a roll call of some of the world’s most famous performers: Madonna, U2, James Brown, Prince, Nina Simone and many more. He also supplied the Strangeways road sign image for The Smiths’ final album Strangeways Here We Come.

In recent years, Stephen’s portfolio has taken on more corporate clients. His work, photographing leading figures such as Tony Blair and the CEOs of important commercial companies, is regarded as creative, sympathetic and highly effective.
