Great show.
For the occasion "Irish Blood, English Heart" was changed into "Irish Blood, Italian Heart".
When introducing the band, Michael Farrell was introduced as "Fabio Cannavaro".
Lots of in-jokes about Italy, as expected.
Many people tried to jump on-stage and hug the man... notably one guy called Andrea (I heard people from the crowd calling his name), was tackled in a very funny way by security, crashed on the floor, but managed nonetheless to hug the man.
An unforgettable night.

What a great show (Score:1, Interesting)
It was a great show in a great venue (with ancient roman ruins all around) and don't forget that Ostia was the place where Pasolini was killed 31 years ago.
And obviously, the first Moz words were "Mamma Roma!!!" (the movie by Pasolini, with the great italian actress Anna Magnani).
Moz and the band in great shape. He was witty as usual with a lot of references to the recent World Cup Tournament (he said jokely that his favourite team was Ukraina).
Lot of flowers thrown on the stage and a great extra-job for security body guards (five fans climbed the stage...oh, how I wished I were younger...I could have tried too!!!).
Great performance on Human Being!
I noticed that there was not the background screen with Oscar Wild on it (as it was in Codroipo-Udine)...and Moz didn't wear bright coulors shirts (Just brown and blue!!!).
It was a perfect gig on a perfect night in a perfect place...even if I was waiting in vain for Last Night closing the show!!!
Bye, all you Moz fans from Italy and from all over the world!!!

“Let's reinvent the gods, all the myths of the ages…”
The setting, in effectively the cradle of Western civilization, was unsurpassable, and the only back-drop required to the full raw-stone-seated amphitheatre was the lit-up columns at the back of the stage for the new Roman Emperor! The exquisite classical music selection at the beginning seemed perfect there. The Pasolini fact is interesting. Your country is awe-inspiring, with a colossal heritage that lives on, and an immediate warm slightly mischievous (!) friendliness on the ready. We discovered the ambient luxurious feng-shui of Hotel Russi on Friday, and the popular fare of Monte Carlo’s on Saturday, after a brief detour into an Irish pub nearby – The Abbey Theatre – where half the people we spoke to were going to the concert the next day.
I also thought Gandlord had teeth, and hadn’t heard Human Being or Panic before on the tour. Morrissey’s voice sounded unquenchable and unstaunchable, radiating, especially for I’ll Never be Anybody’s Hero Now – tremendous. There was a lot of interest in the intro song medley. Myself and my friend who I hooked up with en route, did the tourist bit before the show, ambling through the ruins and I was astonished to happen upon the theatre where the sound check was in progress. I was even more astonished moments later to spot Morrissey arrive, circling the stage, listening keenly. A gift! As we went on our way, We’ll Let You Know was rehearsed a couple of times, and I was surprised it wasn’t later played at the gig. It would have been really significant if he’d premiered the whole of Dear God Please Help Me there; perhaps another time.
It’s true that security had their work cut out for them during the concert. The crowd was appreciative. Morrissey charmingly bent to kiss the first female stage invader’s hand, and as about the third was led off, he quipped “Next”. To one who almost reached him, he asked: “Are you lost?!”, and another in green tour-shirt made several valiant efforts towards the very end. Someone mentioned the Kristeen Young/Rita Pavone comparison he made which he qualified… He said there wasn’t much time for talking. He asked Julia was she dehydrated. She is like the ‘living sign’ of fans perhaps, a conduit for his concern for all in a way. I glimpsed her while queuing; very dignified. She reminds me somewhat of Holly Hunter. Morrissey changed the words in Let me Kiss You to you’d try anyone (vs. anything) twice. There were some big-cat growls like he did on ‘Rank’. Physically he glowed; top condition. One shirt was thrown, and an argy-bargy ensued. The band develops and blossoms constantly; Boz’ sax solo, Mikey’s trombone & keyboard pieces for example. Great show indeed.

Anyway... the theatre in Ostia was absolutely amazing.. There was no backwall or something.. so we were all looking at Moz and the band in front of this ancient Roman Pillars... the steep steps of the theatre made it really intimate and the sound was great.. Actually, the band was also very outgoing, cheerful and enthousiastic..
There were a lot of people from England, Belgium, Netherlands, Amerika as well.. and even better...lots and lots of people were wearing Moz or Smiths t-shirts.. cool!!!
I want to thank the Italian guys (one of you is studying fashion design in Rome.. I regret to ask for your names!!!)...and girl who gave me a lift back to Rome and dropped me off at Termini at 01.00 o'clock, which meant i didn't had to take a night bus back... You guys (m/f) were great...and speak perfectly English as well
Also a thank you to Trevor from London.. i didn't made it onto the stage (obviously..as you would have noticed that..)...but couldn't find you at the pit anymore when i did return.... sadly....drop me a line if you want to, so maybe we can enjoy another Moz concert (London!!) and some beer again..

"Mamma Roma!" (Score:2, Informative)
It was odd. This rattly old train, without a hint of either a Moz fan or anyone going anywhere in particular on it, headed off through the Rome extremities and into the country. We really did think we were on a hiding to nothing, it was about nine, and when we eventually pulled into Ostia the station was deserted and there was absolutely no indication there was a gig on at all. We stopped in at a cafe next to the station and asked for the theatre, to be told to cross the footbridge over the dual carriageway and keep going straight. Eventually we came across a road with a restaurant on it, some people were gathering, and further on was a ticket booth and a entrance. A blessed relief. A small picture of Morrissey on a poster indicated this wasn't all a dream but as we entered and walked down a dark path, trees all around, it started to get more sureal. Then the ruins begin and you're walking through stone columns and long deserted houses before turning a corner and seeing, from the back of the open stage, 3,000 people sat in an open air ampitheatre. It was quite an astonsihing sight. A musky might, out in what felt the middle of nowhere, ruins all around, and now a rocky path towards the lights and the crowd.
The intro tape was just starting so we had about half an hour to get some beers in at a small operation at the base of the rear of the theatre before climbing some steep, ancient steps into the top, rear lip of this amazing place. It's a semi-circular dome rising up from the standing level, row after row of stone steps, with people sat on foam cushions. The roadies were testing the guitars and even they got a rousing cheer whenever a note was played - everyone was buzzing. We stood right at the top, right up at the back, where the natural stone above us provided a shelf for the beers, and enough room to dance. When The Pretenders version of Everyday Is Like Sunday was played, the entire crowd clapped and sung along. This was clearly going to be special.
The Smoking Popes' 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was played loudly and the house lights cut half way through to enourmous cheers. Then silence and a blackout for a good, long minute. Then, with the stage open at the back to gardens, trees, and pillars, the stones were illuminated in turquoise as 'What A Pretty' sprayed out and I'll tell you - what a sight! It was so beautiful.
Moz and the band strode out to thunderous applause. "Mamma Roma!" and into Panic. This ampitheatre must have seen some sights in it's time but everyone, everyone, dancing to this must be a date to remember even for a structure so ancient. First Of The Gang to Die kept the pace up and the first of the stage invaders respectfully hugged him, the girl not wanting to let go but dealt with carefully and with understanding by security.
One stage invader lept on and sprinted at Moz at full pelt but was grabbed and swung around my the T-Shirt onto the deck before getting a handshake of the man and being led away looking a little concussed. It's a good job he was tackled to be honest because he would have flattened Moz had he gone into him with that force. A bunch of flowers were flung onto the stage. Morrissey swung them around before sticking them out of his side pocket as another stage invader rushed up. It was 1985.
"I'd like to tell you, if I may, what I've been doing recently." He stated. Mikey played the opening to Dear God but Moz forgot his cue and it repeated. "If I can remember" he added, looking concerned. He did come in the second time, sounding shaky, but only managed "I have been walking through Rome, with my heart on a string" before giving up and making a 'chugga chugga chugga' guitar noise into the mic and the band caught on, diving into You Have Killed Me. As the intro played he said "I tri

BUT
thank God it was all for Moz!
The scenario was amazing, he was amazing, the start of Dear God..was amazing...it was all fucking amazing!
Real panic during the first couple of songs as the crowd clearly went for it and the security was totally unprepared! We were at the front and security had to hold on to the barriers to stop them from falling until more (and more security people) were rushed in.
The only thing that ruined the day for me (as someone previously mentioned) was the real bad public transport, added on a very physically demanding day (due to the heath and the not so easy to get to location).
Except for that it was all magic!
