Morrissey Titles New Album - Pitchfork, Oct. 5

Timothy Najmolhoda reports:
Wow, there sure are a lot of Morrissey fan websites out there. I thought that one, maybe two, would be enough to sustain the world's thirst for The Boy With The Thorn In His Side. But I typed the Moz's name into Google (and then once again, but this time spelled correctly), and I saw how woefully wrong I was. This guy seriously has a cult. Who knew?!

Whether each site fulfills some different niche of Morrissey fandom, I don't know, but right now they're all abuzz with the same news: Jeff Saltzman, the Killers producer who was previously set to twiddle knobs on Morrissey's forthcoming album, is no longer working on the project. Taking his place in the studio is the legendary Tony Visconti, best known for his work with T. Rex and David Bowie.

But there's more! NME.com reports that the album in question now has a title: Ringleader Of The Tormentors. Nice to see that Morrissey's political attacks aren't getting more subtle in his old age, eh? Ringleader is Morrissey's first studio album since 2004's You Are The Quarry, which won Pitchfork's coveted "38th-Best Album of 2004" award. According to True to You, one of the aforementioned fan sites, Morrissey describes the new album as "the most beautiful-- perhaps the most gentle so far." Strange, considering his publicist told us last month that this would be a "balls-to-the-wall" rock record, and "not slow like the last one." Fans will find out who's telling the truth when the album is released next April. It better be some weird fusion of hardcore and folk, or we'll be totally disappointed.

Wilde is on my side writes:
On Radio 4 this Thursday (13th October) at 11pm Andrew McGibbon is going to be talking about Morrissey and his time drumming with him.

I checked it up on the R4 site, and it says:

"In this fast-moving half-hour, comedian and writer Andrew McGibbon - a superb live and session drummer who has worked with everyone from Peter Gabriel to Bucks Fizz - recalls his drumming sojourn with Morrissey, arguably one of the wittiest and most profound rock poets of his generation.

With contributions from Suggs, The Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke, long-suffering producers Clive Langer (Elvis Costello, Dexy's Midnight Runners), Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths) and Danton Supple (Coldplay), as well as jaundiced journalists David Quantick and Mark Kermode."

The Buzz Log - Search Spikes and Trends

Shooting Stars
Tuesday October 11, 2005 11:00AM PT

We're all superstars in our own way, but to paraphrase the great Morrissey, some stars are bigger than others. When it comes to the stars of Search, we found you're not really looking for those twinkling lights that dot the night sky. No, it seems the stars you are looking for aren't the kind we can write about here. You know what we mean -- rhymes with "born star" (wink, wink, hint, hint). While we can't shed any light on that topic, we can enlighten you with the top 20 "star" searches that are fit for print...

Andy Rourke DJ Tour

From: Free Times (Ohio)

Soundcheck : Andy Rourke : Smiths Bassist

WHEN THE SMITHS EMERGED from Manchester, England in the early 1980s, they immediately became an underground sensation. Singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, drummer Mike Joyce and bassist Andy Rourke blazed an alternative music trail that has led the way for many subsequent acts. Eighteen years after their breakup, bassist Andy Rourke has decided to embark on a DJ tour, spinning his favorite tunes to adoring audiences that never got to see the Smiths in a live setting. Rourke recently spoke to us via phone from his Manchester home.

Can anyone confirm if the last image is actually supposed to be Morrissey? Can anyone identify the Morrissey photograph it might be based on?

The Angel of Covent Garden by Colin Bytheway was broadcast last night and is available on Listen again for one week on the BBC radio 4 site.

An offbeat gay love story set in central London the bittersweet tone is offset by some acerbic dashes of humour.

The piece features an older actress who puts up a young man who is new in town . Her favourite song is Moon River. The song becomes a motif of the play . The Play's young protagonist - who has left the North for the Big Smoke (Morrisseyesque theme) - buys her a present at one point , a version of the song by " some old Eighties' singer " that he has picked up in Berwick Street. As the credits roll at the end cue extract of Morrissey's version of said tune. Nice touch I thought.

UK music management business and record label Sanctuary is to cut its workforce by a quarter after a series of profit warnings following weak trading.

The firm, which has offices in London, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and Berlin, is to cut 175 jobs but has not yet said where the axe will fall.

Sanctuary's stable of artists include Sir Elton John, the Manic Street Preachers, Morrissey and Iron Maiden.

The firm said it hoped the move would soon return to profitability.
