Mike Joyce still misses The Smiths

Thanks to Stephane Daigle for the following:

I was sent a copy of a new magazine from and about Western Ireland called Magpie. The issue is the November 1998 one and it includes Mike Joyce answering a short questionnaire. It is not very long, so I decided to type it for others to enjoy.

The issue also has a lengthier features on Irish immigration in Manchester, but I will not type that part, as (though it is interesting) it doesn't mention the Smiths and might only be of interest to Johnny Rogan.

To order a copy, or subscribe to the magazine, write to [email protected]

"As the most critically acclaimed and musically accomplished band of the 1980s, The Smiths are said to have changed the course of popular music. Their drummer, Mike Joyce from Manchester, is really a West of Ireland man - his father came from Galway and his mother from Portarlington (a small aberration). Mike is currently working on a new project with Liverpool's Pete Wylie."

IT MAKES LIFE WORTH LIVING
The girls in my life, Tina, Faye and Olivia.

IT MAKES LIFE HELL
When people around me are not as passionate as I am about my music.

MOST DAYS ARE...
Not long enough to do the things I want to do.

PEOPLE THINK I'M...
A thick skinned, happy go lucky eternal optimist.

I AM...
See above.

IT MAKES ME CRY
Seeing the innocent children of any war torn / impoverished / famine stricken country suffer.

IT CHANGED MY LIFE
Meeting a certain Johnny Marr, way, way back in 1982.

I'VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE THIS, BUT...
I still miss The Smiths.

IMPORTANT PEOPLE
Mam, Dad, Tina, Faye, Olivia, J Lennon, J Marr, J Rotten, Bach, G Klimy, P Mondrian, Escher, O Wilde, I Welsh, R Doyle, S Hughes, S Coogan.

IMPORTANT PLACES
Manchester, Lymm, Portarlington, Shrule.

A PERFECT DAY
Manchester City 3 - Manchester United 2. FA Cup Final 1999.

"I still miss The Smiths"......PATHETIC! For many years, he causes a commotion about back royalties, and now he pulls this out his ass?!? We all know such a case is justifiable, but does he REALLY expect us to believe has repect for the history? He obviously sees cash value in the band, and that, I think is what he misses the most.

Regardless of my admiration for Morrissey, I still think that the Smiths were 4 very creative and talented individuals. And not just Moz and Marr. Mr. Joyce, if you're out there, I'd love to be part of any musical projects you have in mind. JS Bach is also a huge influence. I've been playing Gtr for 17 years.

The Smiths are the only Band!

i read some years ago that this guy said that he would never return to the smiths because "the image of moz dancing was a completely old-fashioned one"... i'm sure i read it... and now he comes with this pathetic story...

this is tooooooooo cute!
It IS kinda pathetic, but this is the first time I've heard a band member within the Smiths to say that they miss the experience. Maybe Morrissey will forgive Joyce after hearing this comment......?

Joyce has always maintained his love and nostalgia for the Smiths, gushing about it in almost every article I've read with him in it. Sad, really. It just goes to show you how special the Smiths really were, when someone who was a part of them is still in awe of the whole thing.
....and I have to dry my eyes.

The rhythm that Mike Joyce gave the Smiths is second to none. They would not have been"THE SMITHS" without him (or any other member for that matter). Morrissey is a greedy sneak who stole money from someone who truly deserved it. You are all so callow, you don't see the real Morrissey(the theif, and he knows it). It is fine to like the music, the lyrics---love it even, but Morrissey is not a God. He is a self-serving jerk with a knack for words. He cares for Mike Joyce and everyone else about as much as I care for all of you.

Once again we have a wonderfully insightful look into the mind of Morrissey from Happiness. Can I meet you? I want to hear of your times with Morrissey. Oh wait. You don't know him personally? Certainly anyone with your views must. It must be so fulfilling to have the psychic(?) ability to do this. And even more fulfilling to use it to insult not only only man, but hundreds of thousands of others along with it. You're terrific!

Of course Mike misses the Smiths. Can you imagine? Those were glorious days. The legal issue is done-finished. And before you rush to judgement, remember business is business. Don't side with Morrissey;you can be totally certain you are in the right and still be completely wrong (MORRISSEY). Fair is fair. It was a team effort. Morrissey writes a song about it and people take that point of view (As usual).

I'm not particularly judgmental about the whole Morrissey/Joyce saga...but can you imagine having actually been in The Smiths? I mean...can you actually imagine it???

I can not believe what a sad breed Smiths fans are. I truly like The Smiths and most of Morrissey's work, but as a human being Morrissey is an ass. He is probably the most egotistical person in the universe, probably the reason for his great lyrics. Read Rogan's book, and about how he treats people with sheer contempt. Also note that most of the people, apart from Linder Sterling maybe, who know Morrissey at a certain point totally break with him.
Face it, the man is an @#!!! that meaks damn good songs, like Celine was an @#!!! who wrote damn good books.
Joyce just took what he was entitled to.He would have been stupid not to. I would prefer having a beer with him than with Moz.
