Support of fans proves crucial as Morrissey plays to packed house

MUSIC: Crowd stays excited despite technical glitches, forgotten lyrics

Rows of pompadours milled about, anxiously awaiting the grand pompadour of the evening. Yes, Morrissey was back in town, and he played to a packed Universal Amphitheatre on Mar. 2.

As the evening began, the lights dimmed and disco pin lights flashed on outlining in capital letters "Moz Angeles," a testament to Morrissey's love for his new home and to his confidence in his ability to woo the crowd.

As the theme music from James Bond's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" piped in over the PA system, Moz sauntered onto the stage dressed in skin-tight pleather pants and jacket, and struck muscle poses for his screaming fans. By the time "Ouiji Board" began, a downpour of flowers, letters and boxing gloves splashed across the stage floor and across the faces of Morrissey and his band.

The first few minutes of the show set the tone for the rest of the evening, and Morrissey's connection to his fans was apparent during the show. Between songs, he lamented and made sarcastic remarks regarding his independent status, and the crowd would respond with cheers and supporting calls of "We love you!" During songs, he took time to dip his hand in to the crowd and smile as fans gave him flowers and trinkets.

Morrissey crooned a variety of songs picked from his many albums and included some Smiths songs into the set as well. After an eerie rendition of "Teachers," the set turned red and pulsed with every beat of "Meat is Murder." The mixture of light and sound brought out the feeling and power of the song, but the effect was dampened when Morrissey stopped the vocals during parts of the song because he forgot the lyrics. The crowd forgave him, however, and helped sing the words for him.

Morrissey has based his entire career around his faults, wants, fears and despair, and these aspects of his music and character have given him a human quality, unlike some of the other music stars who have an unaccessible and unreal persona.

Perhaps that helped the crowd stay excited through the numerous times that Morrissey would stop singing due to his constant battle with the sound from the monitors. Even though the second half of the show had its share of technical difficulties with the sound, Morrissey took it lightly and let the crowd sing when he couldn't.

Despite the fact that Moz couldn't hear himself, his voice that poured out of the speakers was pure gold. After years of touring, Morrissey still puts 100 percent into his singing. Songs like "Now My Heart is Full," "Hated for Loving" and "Billy Budd" lost none of their magic that was captured on "Vauxhall and I." Combined with changing backdrops full of movie stills of Steve McQueen, Kirk Douglas from "Champion," and football logos, the presentation proved impressive.

As the lights came up and the sounds of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" wafted over the departing crowd, fans cast aside the nagging criticisms from the music press, who said that without a label or promoter, Morrissey was finished. Friday evening's performance shows that an artist with a very dedicated fan base can survive on his own.

What? I don't think Moz forgot the lyrics. They make him sound like an 80 year old Frank Sinatra or something. Morrissey always leaves lyrics out or changes them around. But I really don't think he forgot them.

Too bad these two photographs are not able to be enlarged. I really like these two shots.
No, Morrissey would not forget the lyrics to his songs.

The set lists for almost all the shows are on the tour page, along with blow by blow accounts.

Maribel, not to sound like a stalker, but do you drive a white Honda?

My thoughts are with everyone here. These are the best pics i have seen of moz. Someone has to get in touch with the photographer (i'm jealous). They would make great kick ass posters. And make them enlarge please.

I love Moz, but felt the delivery was VERY sloppy. Go to other shows of other performers, establish a basis for comparison, and you'll see. Blind adoration has lulled him into complacency. Very sloppy, indeed.

As a musician, there are few who inspire me so deeply, and personally as Morrissey. Friday's show was my first time seeing him live. I have to agree with Gerry Larson- the deliverance was sloppy, if not offensively silly, and lacking. Good thing I didn't pay for my great seats.

In regard to the comment that Morrissey's delivery is poor compared to other performers, isn't that the beauty of Morrissey? He appears awkward and, yes, even silly at times. I really don't think he takes all of this too seriously.

That night, i was in the pit, and as moz came my way, i threw my hand out, and he grabbed it, and he sang to me, looking into my eyes for a good 15 seconds or so, it was so amazing, i was wonderful and amazing, i was so happy, that was the greatest concert i have been to, and i think it will stay that way. sorry for all of you who missed it

ok, for one thing the show was the 3rd of march, not the 2nd (i cant help but mention that error because my friends and i had a countdown). another thing, moz forgot the lyrics to "november spawned a monster" i dont think it was meat is murder (and i never saw him raise his fist, which i was anxiously waiting for). thank you, for mentioning frankie's "my way" at the end, i noticed that at the palladium show and wondered if moz intentionally set that up, the song does fit him.
we had pit tickets and i believe that the show was amazing and not "sloppy" as most would call it.

Well of course he is sloppy, he is really OLD. Forgetting lyrics, well he was never that smart to begin with.....
Gee, surpise, surprise....

Get a LIFE! Morrissey is ridiculous and has lost any ounce of importance. This is just another bit of proof!

Hey Morrissey Sucks - go to an Anti-Morrissey-Solo website then!

He has not lost his importance to me...

Does it really matter if the world at large (most of the people who fill it have awful taste) think Moz is important.

He and his band play terrific music with intense lyrics and vocals.

How often do you get to see THAT live these days.

You suck.

Morrissey most certainly does not.

Why go to an anti-Morrissey website when there is so much fun here?

Thanks for you input though. Well noted...

Hello there. I am the photographer who made the photographs above. Thank you for being so kind in regards to my work. Because I photographed for a newspaper and because of copyright, it will be hard to distribute larger images online, but I'm working out something with the paper so that I can get 8X10 or 11X14 reprints out to whoever wants to purchase one. If you would be interested, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you again and hello to all of my new friends I made at the show.
