Moz-inspired novel in progress, seeks input

From Ryan Ikonen:

My name is Ryan and I'm a 22-year-old artist/writer/student in South Florida. I'm in the midst of writing a novel called THE UNRAVELING, part of which probes issues of pop-star crushes. It is inspired by my personal experience of letter-writing to Moz, but it actually goes a lot further, symbolizing a young woman's quest for her own notions of reality in a world often in favor of less imagination and more conformity. I would absolutely love your constructive input if you can relate to what I have written. Thanks

My name is Ryan and I'm a 22-year old pretentious, no talent, unoriginal failure who will not get a single page published!

OUCH...did I just step into a load of crap, or is the beginnings of another page of cruelty? (See above postings) Already putting someone down before they've begun? Sounds a bit hypocritical, coming from those professing to be fans of Morrissey. I guess if Morrissey said he approved of Ryan's efforts, then everyone else approves as well? Anyway, I was so taken back when I opened this topic, that I was just wondering why this started out so full of negativity!?

to the first two apparently-unhappy individuals who commented here: you think you've won, but...
you've only won the temporary satisfaction of putting others down to put yourselves up. you know, actually, seeing that everyone is a teacher, you've taught me what every person who "just hasn't earned it yet" , or even those who have- spm, perhaps?-, must face from people. i am a sensitive person, and it really hurt to read the first two messages on this board. but you know what? i'll get over it. thank you, j, for keepin' it real. word up!

rude? you call sending an email in nothing but CAPS A GESTURE OF ETIQUETTE?

what i was saying, you lugnut, was that you probably weren't the first person on this site to write such a thing. That is all I will say, and no, i'll bet they won't share in their research, either.

now, quit trying to read something vicious into things where there is nothing to get riled up about.

oh, one more tid-bit, to the boy least likely to lend a kind word of support...if no one is willing to publish my book when it is finished- and that happens even to the best- i will publish it myself. that's how passionate i feel about what i'm doing. thank you for feeding the fire!

i listened to the words of ancient fellows transcended
and naively thought that by now, the cruelty had ended
how long will we continue to stab our own souls through others
mistaking as feelingless stones, our sisters and brothers?

Ryan, If I had a lire for every person I know who's been in the process of "writing a novel" of the sort you are proposing while having to pay $759,886,014 for every person I know who's completed such a novel, I would still be wealthy beyond my wildest dreams. Even you should be able to understand everyone's cynicism. You sound like the guy from the movie Election who's always going on about his novel that never happens. If you actually had a completed book in hand, you wouldn't sound like such a prat but you don't.

As a writer who's actually been published, the one piece of advice I can give is that you should never talk about a work in progress to anyone. Writers always crave a creative release and merely talking about an original story can give that. It tends to work out that the more you talk about something, the less likely you are to actually write it.

Give Ryan a break already. Somebody posts a little blurb about writing a book and everybody else feels threatened. It's quite sad, if you were to ask me. And I don't care who's published and who's not-- the novel might be worthwhile (and, I'll admit, it might not). All you cynics who have yet to read a word of it don't have a clue which. This is the last definitive word on the subject, the rest is conjecture so let it go and let's move on and let Ryan do the same.

Boy Least Likely, I've run into you before, and suprise, suprise, you're still an absolute twat. Just one question, why do you listen to Morrissey's music? What could you possible get out of it?

Suzanne, why are you such a nasty bitch? Does it make you feel good to jump all over Ryan's efforts? If so then I suggest you go into therapy and find out exactly what is wrong with you.

Ryan,

For years, I have had a crush on the lead singer of Shonen Knife. I feel quite unraveled because of it. Please publish this on page 38 of your book.

Thanks,
bucktooth

Seriously, although I know your intentions are good, and you don't deserve to get such abusive replys from the others on this site, this site is probably the worst place to pose such a request for info. If you have read posts on this site, you will find that it is an outlet for a lot of smart allecky people (I'm often one of them) that enjoy sounding off about all sorts of stuff and mostly people are just talking sh*t.

I wish you the best of luck on your book, and I suggest you keep it on the down low, as writing is a very competitive business.

duh, you people, I was NOT giving her a hard time. Jeez, you idjits, all it started out with was me being coy! Me hinting that she was not alone. The rest of the time was spent refuting ill founded accusations. I was not harassing her or doing anything bad, so you people do need to get a life.

furthermore, when I do post something in regards to the book, am I required to say, "hey, good luck!" ????

Cripes, do you people even realize what sort of abuse she is going up against since she is choosing a career in the arts? My imagined display is very pathetic in comparison to the other brutalities that await her, so you really need to get over your idealistic selves. Wait until the rejection letters and harsh reviews start rolling in! Unless you have someone helping you out, nobody gives a @#!!! about your emotional welfare in this field period. They look at two things:

1. Their money.
2. How they can get money out of your work.

If she is going to go home and cry over that, then she needs to hang it up right now. As for me, I don't give a @#!!! about my stuff. It's not like I'm holding mine up as the prize and everyone else's as sucky assed. Why? because I live in the real world, and I realize that the chances are slim that anyone will ever look at what I wrote with any interest, and it doesn't matter to me either way. I wrote 63,000 some-odd words, and it was for my benefit, so I'm not jealous or anything.

Hey, knobsucks, give the girl a chance. And "girl least likely to", it's no good just listening to one of Morrissey's songs and judging a person. Listen to the rest, read his interviews, and, most importantly, read Ryans book before judging. Fool...
