Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me...

I was listening to this song in the car the other day, and I remembered reading on here that a few of you guys don't like it, and I was baffled. I really can't see why. The sentiment in the lyrics...hasn't everyone felt this way at one time or another? The wonderful piano intro, the dramatic ending..."the story is old, I know, but it goes on..." How could anyone ever dislike this song? More importantly, WHY would they?!!?

I was also listening to "oscillate Wildly" which I defy anyone with ears to dislike, and "Some Girls" which absolutely shimmers.

So there.

Agree 100% ,Dumbledore I reckon it's one of the best in the Smiths canon.
The intro to LNIDTSLM must be one of the most powerful ever, and the song just gets better and better.

I also agree (surprise!). It's one of those rare occasions rare Morrissey turns himself up to 11 and gets away with it. One of those bizarre irony-free moments in the smiths that actually works. In fact it may be the ONLY time he's gone too far and got away with it. Cos I think "Asleep" is a bit self-indulgent and turgid even if genuinely affective.

I know that's heresy and so many of you folks have cried yourselves to sleep listening to it. Sorry.

That's what I think anyway.

There's a live version of 'Some Girls' (version with 'On the shop floor' verse) which sends shivers down my spine.. the intricate picking in the intro overwhelms the senses.. wonderful. Where was that version recorded?

'Last Night' is a great song... a great overblown (in parts) celebration of loneliness! But the Smiths did very little wrong. You're preaching to the perverted here (C) PWEI.. 'That Joke Isn't Funny' is one I put in the 'Last Night' category as well..

At the risk of sounding like a valley girl... yay! PWEI! Sublime.

Well done for having such good taste.

"This is the law, don't argue!"

Can u dig it?

I bet you can guess Ruffian's favourite way of getting kicks...

"This is the Day, This is the hour" sticks with me because when I first got it home in its magnificent pop art cover, I didn't like it at all.. but then, in those days, I used to listen on my walkman, from Cannon St to Aldgate, my albums, and gave it another chance.. and it was brilliant to listen to piped straight in the ears!

'Def Con 1' 'Can U Dig it (samples from the cult classic 'Warriors' movie)', 'Wise Up'.. yeah great moments..

Of coures, the only downside was is that they were Brummies, and now we'll have Bluenose upping their credibility factor!

Funny you should say that because that's how I used to listen to it, on a tape in my Sony Walkman (which I still have). Difference is I was 13/14 and on the way to/going away from school when I was indulging in it.

They were gazillions of years ahead of their time. The fact that I only discovered em in the early nineties and the fact they still sound fresh today only confirms this!

I LOVE that song! It's SO melodramatic, so tragic, just wonderful. Maybe I love it so much because one day I DID dream that somebody was totally in love with me and I woke up so elated, then cried when I realised it was a dream.

Or maybe I'm just a drama queen.......
