it's not just americans who are apathetic - people everywhere feel uncomfortable about intervening in these situations. on one hand people want to stop domestic violence but on the other hand they don't want to be seen to be interfering in others' private lives. :(

my nearest neighbours are usually very nice, except that one of them sometimes annoys me (her TV and music are always really loud, she leaves all her stuff lying around everywhere, when she's drunk (which is often) she's even more loud and untidy, and then she accuses others...

it's not the UK's biggest-selling paper, it has lost a lot of readers in the last few years, but it still sells a few hundred thousand copies per day :(
