Everything post 69 Lovesongs has been crap compared to what came before. Notable exception being Hyacinths & Thistles.
He began to believe the "indie Noel Coward" reviews in the press. "I" and the last album were shite. "Distortion" was okay, but still it pales in comparison to Distant...
I unintentionally saw Stephin Merritt perform 13 years ago, opening for The Tindersticks. I have been in love ever since. Nobody I knew had really heard of them, until 69 Love Songs came out. Now they're more of a household name. Saw them 3 times this year.
I saw Fugazi twice; once in '90 or '91 at the Gilman with The Offspring opening, for $5. The first two albums are my favorite. I remember a friend telling me that Minor Threat had turned into a new band, and I ran out and bought the 13 Songs cassette.
Shirley Bassey, not Judy Garland. I was never able to find a hard copy of it. Heard it was a b-side to a UK single, which would make sense as to how Moz heard it.
I believe Gordon's father was a minister, which explains the religious theme running through their music. "Hallowed Ground" is as good as their eponymous debut.
I saw them in the mid '90s somewhere near Vacaville in Northern California. I was talking to the drummer before the show, but didn't know he was the drummer until I saw him onstage. Their major label stuff isn't nearly as good as their New Red Archives material.
PS for a second I thought it...
I first saw Magnetic Fields open up for The Tindersticks in '95; I've been a fan ever since. Seen them 5 times. They did the entire 69 Love Songs in order over 2 nights in '99. Get "6 Rows Of Teeth" and "The Long Goodbye" V/A comps for Stephin and Susan Anway doing "Plant White Roses"; it's...
As a band whose album sales are in the millions, and one of the highest grossing live acts ever, I don't really think they could be considered different. And covering an album which has sold 25,000,000 worldwide doesn't really add to the different argument.
Not liking 30 minute bluegrass...
Walker Brothers
It's already been deleted, but if you can find the "Live In Japan" reisse from Japan you should. It's the first time it's been released on cd and has lots of tracks they only performed live.
