Famous animal lover as he is, Morrissey has mentioned many animals in both his Smiths and solo songs.

Can you name all of the creatures mentioned in his lyrics. There are 14 that I can think of.

Exclusions: cover versions, unreleased material and 'Alsatian Cousin' as this refers to someone from the region of Alsace, not the animal!

offhand I can think of lamb (yes I am blind), heifer, calf (meat is murder), horse (is it really so strange) and that's it. Anyone else??

A lemon sole so very high

which only reminds me.

Is Lemon sole the name of the fish or the way it's prepared? Anyway we'll have 'sole' as in Dover even though it should be on the outisde of his ark swimming about.

Damn that bengali.

Bringing the total up to 18...

> Is Lemon sole the name of the fish or the way it's prepared?

I belive the Lemon Sole is the name of a fish otherwise known as the Flounder.
Either way you slice it, the fish has both eyes on one side of his head...and that's slightly creepy.
They belong in the same creepy land as earwigs.

you forgot "that turkey you festively slice"

Don't forget The Dead Milkmen

They sang about serving filet of sole . Personally, I like mine stufffed with crab. ("it's okay to eat fish 'cuz they don't have any feelings")

little bit of sole and i'm feelin' fine little bit of sole and i'm losing my mind .....oh...i lose...control.... when you serve filet of sole

But, you can't forget the LL COOL J! YEAH BOYEEE! His momma said knock you out...
"You can taste the bass like it's filet-of-sole"
or my homie Ian Anderson sang in Jethro Tull:

"She eats filet of sole and washes it down with sparkling wine"
Who ever knew that the filet of sole was such an inspirational fish?

And that pesky turkey lyric eluded me.

Bringing the grand total of animal references up to 19...

and, wee...

Animal quiz (Everything and more)

Well, you nailed them all eventually. Though I was surprised at how you were all over heifer and calf, yet it took so long to mention turkey from the same song!

A few stretched the original brief, but rather than quibble, I will join in.
So if 'corned beef' is allowable, then I think there is room for the 'leather' from 'This Charming Man' and 'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore' ('This' & 'That' for short.)

Also, I think in the context of 'Bengali' the 'lemon sole' is a shoe rather than a fish (though admittedly probably a deliberate pun). Therefore I would like to make a case for 'pen' from 'I Am Hated For Loving'. I'm sure he's referring to the writing instrument, but out of context the word also means 'a female swan'.

And if we're going to allow that, then it seems churlish to exclude 'Alsatian' so it's hereby reinstated, along with the 'fish' from the live version of 'Whats The World'!

Bringing the animal tally to 23! Any other offers?

AH yeah, that turkey thing again. I'm not perfect, you know...the turkey gets me every damn time. I swear.

That's why I wrote "questionable" after them....I wasn't sure if they would be technically counted....

Perhaps the old chap really did mean a lemon sole fish so very high ...a silver studded rim that glistens..a hook perhaps? catching the fish, sending it soring into the sky, it's putting up a tough fight...its scales blinding him...ah yeah, i don't believe it either.

> Bringing the animal tally to 23! Any other offers?

Should you, then, leave out the obviously questionable ones and go with the plain obvious..?
Which would bring the tally down to...something like 17 ?
