How come this was released as a 'Maxi' single in the US on Reprise?

Because the sleeve (with my neighbour Cornelius Carr) is by 'Whores in retirement' I assume Morrissey had a hand in it. But why, when the band had been gone for 8 years or so, did they release a Smiths single?

I thought it might be a tie-in with the film 'The Boxer' (also feat. C.C) but that was a different year wasn't it?

Ideas anyone?

i think it was a way for those tracks to make it into the mainstream US market. they had not been released in the US previously. lots of the more casual US buyers* who don't buy imports or know how to get them might be interested in a release like this.

*probably no-one on this site qualifies as such, so it's a bit hard to relate, i know...
