Dear Mr. DeCurtis:

I can' t tell you how excited I was to discover that you had written the retrospective essay in the new 10,000 Maniacs collection, "Campfire Songs." I am a fan of your writing and look forward to seeing your reports on television as well. However, you should know that you made an egregious error in your "Campfire" essay when you referred to "Everyday Is Like Sunday" as a Smiths song. It most certainly is not Smiths song. The song appears on Morrissey's "Viva Hate," which I am sure you are familiar with. I hope that you will alert Rhino to this blunder and have them correct the mistake in future pressings.

Regards,
Gina Acosta

Dear Gina: Thanks for your kind words. I have dutifully informed Rhino about the misatrribution. I appreciate your pointing it out. All best, Anthony

Did you know 10,000 Maniacs have released a best of retro called "Campfire Songs, The Popular, Obscure and Unknown Recording (Remastered) and it includes Natalie Merchant's cover of Morrissey's Everyday is like Sunday? Amazon link.

Anyhow, this CD was released in January 27 in the US and will released on February 9 in the UK.

kinda cool little thing i noticed on the shins home page...they're truly albuquerque's finest.

We’re off to Australia first thing in December and we’ll be playing a few shows in London, giddy London in the middle of January. There’s also some talk about something in Wahoo. Visit Sub Pop for more details.
The new record is out. It’s called Chutes Too Narrow. We recorded it in James’ basement and partly at Avast Studios in Seattle with Phil Ek. He tried to touch us. He has a bad touch. Here’s the official site for the release.

It appears that current medical advice is that The Smiths are really bad for you.

I accidentally found the following excerpt from a long detailed article dealing with different ways to handle depression ( medical - self help - psychiatric etc ) for people suffering long term illness or incapacity i.e. HIV etc. It appears that current medical advice is that The Smiths are really bad for you.

"We may need to do things to help us remember good time better, like write out a list and stick it to the fridge, put happy photos on the walls, and play good times music rather than listening to gloomy bands like The Smiths"

Taken from the article "Bright Side Of The Road" ( page 8 ) of the January/February 2004 INSIGHT update from George House Trust, Ardwick Green North, Manchester M12 6FX ( www.ght.org.uk )

I thought it was quite funny.

best regards, Brighton Rich

(incidentally - I am neither depressed, sick or dying, and The Smiths do not depress me - and I no longer live in Brighton - It should really be Liverpool-Rich)

I came across this item while surfing the net on a site called Hollywood Stock Exchange. Apparently, there were plans to make a movie out of Elizabeth Smart's "By Grand Central Station I Sat and Wept" with Mike Figgis (timecode, Leaving Las Vegas) directing. (link)

His current Internet Movie Database profile doesn't list it.
Has anyone else heard about this?
