Acoustic indie outfit Clayhill have a stunning cover of 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want' on the b-side of their new single 'Moon I Hide'. A review and short interview with singer Gavin Clarke about the sentiments of the song, and what it means to him can be found here.

Excerpt:

The b-side to ‘Moon I Hide’ is a cover of The Smiths ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’, and to say that it does the original justice is a vast understatement. Gavin Clark tells me that this was an immediate favourite of his from the moment he first heard it as a teenager on ‘Hatful of Hollow’, he says that he grew up with this song and it “sort of became part of me, as though it was about me, you know, when I was at that stage that all kids go through when they think that they are the only ones in the world, it was vitally important to me”. Further probing, as I myself am a die-hard Smiths fan, and could identify readily with Gavin’s experiences reveal that “...the first time we played it I burst into tears, it’s just one of those songs, I get the impression that it took as long to write as it did to play, it just feels so natural, so spontaneous, a song that just ‘happened’. Sometimes it’s like that, and it just sounds totally beautiful”. Clayhill’s version isn’t too far removed from the original, albeit two minutes longer, the guitar lines are similarly delicate and evocative, swooning and aching, easing to an insistent surge over the middle eight. Gavin Clark’s vocals are immersed in despair, impassioned and desperate he clings to every word of his plea as though it may be his very last.

“..Lord knows, it would be the first time...”
