Of course we find it insulting to be called American. The fact that anyone would admit to admiring George W. Bush (roughly 40% of America's electorate according to the latest polls) is flat out sick. I consider the Republican partie's ideology roughly on par with Jorg Haider's Freedom Party in Austria (ya, I know he has stepped down temporarily due to media pressure). It scares me that these righteous bigots would support a vote requiring rape victims to give birth to an unwanted, not planned child(Unheard of in Canada). It saddens me to know that the wealthiest nation in the world refuses to implement universal health care for all it's citizens. (45 million Americans live without health care protection; meanwhile no one goes broke in Canada for suddenly falling sick). And it's a sad statement (Democrats are also guilty) when Texas holds a double header (no, this is not the Texas Rangers) for executions( Canada outlawed executions in 1976). I could go on, but suffice to say, this helps to explain why I get insulted when someone calls me American.
