Best ever lyric, any artist

Does anyone recall the saddest love of all
The one that lets you fall nothing to hold
It`s the love untold
Paul Westerberg! Of all his great songs, solo and with The Replacements this would not be the first song to come to mind but yeah. Good lyric!

"On the high wire, dressed in a leotard
There wobbles one hell of a retard
On the escalator
You shit paracetamol
As the ridiculous world goes by
"

"Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain."
Dylan 1997, Not Dark Yet

There are people going hungry far away
They've got nothing on their plates
And you're filling your fat face
With every different kind of cake

("A Century of Fakers")

Not the best lyric but it contains a Smiths reference - Dress Like your Mother by Sleeper

You sold your old punk records
Read the book instead
You lost your sense of humour
But you kept the queen is dead
You don't look yourself
You dress like your mother

Yes, Paul does have a lot of great songs, so hard to choose really. Thanks!

Baby's on fire
Better throw her in the water
Look at her laughing
Like a heifer to the slaughter

Baby's on fire
And all the laughing boys are bitching
Waiting for photos
Oh the plot is so bewitching

Rescuers row row
Do your best to change the subject
Blow the wind blow blow
Lend some assistance to the object

Photographers snip snap
Take your time she's only burning
This kind of experience
Is necessary for her learning

If you'll be my flotsam
I could be half the man I used to
They said you were hot stuff
And that's what baby's been reduced to

Juanita and Juan
Very clever with maracas
Making their fortunes
Selling secondhand tobacco's

Juan dances at Chico's
And when the clients are evicted
He empties the ashtrays
And pockets all that he's collected

But baby's on fire
And all the instruments agree that
Her temperature's rising
But any idiot would know that

Caroline says
as she gets up off the floor
Why is it that you beat me
it isn't any fun

Caroline says
as she makes up her eyes
You ought to learn more about yourself
think more than just I

But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind
what is in her mind

Caroline says
as she gets up from the floor
You can hit me all you want to
but I don't love you anymore

Caroline says
while biting her lip
Life is meant to be more than this
and this is a bum trip

But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind
what is in her mind

She put her fist through the window pane
It was such a funny feeling
It's so cold in Alaska
it's so cold in Alaska
It's so cold in Alaska

how romantic of you.

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle

And you sang
Sail to me, sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

Did I dream, you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was full sail?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks

For you sing
Touch me not, touch me not
Come back tomorrow
Oh, my heart
Oh, my heart shies from the sorrow

Well I'm as puzzled as the newborn child
I'm as riddled as the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or should I lie with death my bride?

Hear me sing
Swim to me, swim to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you

i've been listening to this record today. what a coincidence.

how romantic of you.

I was born in a beauty salon
My father was a dresser of hair
My mother was a girl you could call on
When you called she was always there

Ah but don't go home with your hard-on
It will only drive you insane
You can't shake it (or break it) with your Motown
You can't melt it down in the rain
You can't melt it down in the rain

I've looked behind all of the faces
That smile you down to you knees
And the lips that say, Come on, taste us
And when you try to they make you say please

Here come's your bride with her veil on
Approach her, you wretch, if you dare
Approach her, you ape with your tail on
Once you have her she'll always be there

Ah but don't go home with your hard-on
It will only drive you insane
You can't shake it (or break it) with your Motown
You can't melt it down in the rain

So I work in that same beauty salon
I'm chained to the old masquerade
The lipstick, the shadow, the silicone
I follow my father's trade

Ah but don't go home with your hard-on
It will only drive you insane
You can't shake it (or break it) with your Motown
You can't melt it down in the rain

You know I never liked his music and it wasn't the music, or even the lyrics that i disliked.

I found him to be very cliche in the way he presented himself.

Morrissey, on the other hand, I loved the way he presented himself, even if he did borrow heavily (aesthetically) from those he was influenced by.
I'm not being biased here, I swear!

All these fads
It's shoulder pads

On New Year's Dawn
To my surprise
All the Macca lads stayed at home
Picking antiques
and clotheses
Cosy flecked with green bits
Main undercurrent, white spermatoze

My powers
Against them, half-useless
My senses,
Alive, half 'parted

Was embarrassed but stuck with them
Walked, at shoulder, down the street, ridicule
They couldn't tell Lou Reed from Doug Yule
Suppressed make romance
It was like being back at school

My powers before them resound
My powers languish in time, doom

Went populace, internal defeat
Their mob had a coup d'etat
Realize what they'd always wanted
Knew I was right all along
It wasn't then a Beatles song
Superhero in harlequin kecks
Dimwit lecture half read
Cursing black singers ten years dead

Was a clown in victim hat
Was shouldered and spurned

Then my powers did return....

My favorite story about this man is how he insisted that clocks would break around him because of his psychic powers. lol. A one of a kind.

I knew a father who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he'd done
He drove a long way, just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
And he turned around and headed home again

Sonny sits by the window and thinks to himself
How it's strange that some rooms are like cages
Sonny's yearbook from high school is down from the shelf
And he idly thumbs through the pages
Some have died
Some have fled from themselves
Or struggled from here to get there
Sonny wanders beyond his interior walls
Runs his hands through his thinning brown hair
