Lady Gaga pulls out of cover project - Depeche Mode songwriter looses half a million

Re: Lady Gaga to record Depeche Mode's 'People are people' "I didn't know 'they' exis

I'm suspicious this story is even true. Not because of what's "said" but more because there is no mention/record of this interview ever taking place outside of this story. If you're ever unfortunate enough to have spent any time on the Gaga unofficial board you know they count down for weeks to watch or hear anything to do with her - odd that this seems to have gone totally unnoticed by her fansite and the entire rest of the internet. I'll believe it when I hear it.

I heard on the Depeche Mode fanboard that there is suspicion about the interview as well. There is nothing official about it and the site isn't well-established. Like I said I am excited if it is true.

oof. i like that lady gaga is very receptive of music, and i think it's really cool that her fans got her into a band, but depeche mode is FAR from "underrated." i feel like lady gaga thinks any really good band that she hasn't heard of is "underrated" because she hasn't heard of them already. they are basically the most famous electronic band of all time. that said, people are people is a great song but kind of depeche mode 101. i mean it's the first track on the singles comp.

...they are basically the most famous electronic band of all time...

And yet I bet most people in the street would struggle to name a song by them, certainly to name three. I consider myself a huge pop music fan but I'd struggle - saying that 'Enjoy The Silence' is a massive fave.

Am glad (most) people aren't taking the story at face value.

Maybe Depeche Mode should get her back by singing Bad Romance.

I really like some Depeche Mode songs and think that Music For The Masses is as good as anything in the genre, but they just haven't been relevant for a long time. It's not Lady Gaga's fault, so I don't see why people get upset about this story.

Side-Line was informed by a source close to the management of Lady Gaga that she will not be recording a cover of the Depeche Mode classic "People are people" after all. The project got lots of media attention when the coverage on Side-Line was (literally) picked up the day after by MTV, Rolling Stone, Spin Magazine, Playboy, TMF, The Sun and so on and so on. The Side-Line magazine news article itself ("Lady Gaga plans to record Depeche Mode classic 'People are people'") got hit over half a million times (!), just to give you an idea. In a chat with the Side-Line staff our source said: "Lady Gaga has never said that she actually would record a cover, I stress the 'would'. I'm very surprised that this news has spread so fast, including via wellknown sites and in magazines that unlike your magazine never contacted us to verify the news." A pity that the answer only arrived 2 weeks later and that they waited so long to reach out (get the pun?)...
So why did she talk about recording a Depeche Mode cover in the first place? Our source refused to comment on that specifically but did say that "trying to get media attention sometimes gets out of hand even when ventilated on a small radio station and even when it's about artists that should know way better than this". Right.

Sure thing is that the news triggered a lot of negative feedback from Depeche Mode fans worldwide. It suffices to read the feedback in our Lady Gaga vs Depeche Mode article to get an idea. Less amused will be Martin Lee Gore we guess. Gore originally penned the song between 1983 and 1984. Gaga's no-go means the loss of a potential income of at least 455.000 dollar (based on this mechanical royalty calculator) for the Depeche Mode songwriter, considering Lady Gaga's singles tend to sell around 5 million copies.

What Martin loses in profit he'll recover in dignity.

Maybe they should do a tacky comeback complete with Elvis style backing projections? Define relevant - their tours still sell out and their albums sell well, despite a downturn a la SPM.

Also, MFTM is a good choice, but Violator, Songs of Faith & Devotion and Black Celebration are miles ahead.
