LAS VEGAS -- Paris Hilton was arrested on felony cocaine possession charges in Las Vegas late Friday, according to police.

Police arrested Hilton, 29, after they saw what appeared to be a cloud of marijuana smoke coming out of the windows of a black Cadillac Escalade being driven by her boyfriend, 34-year-old Cy Waits.

The officer "followed the vapor trail and the odor of marijuana to the Escalade," police Sgt. John Sheahan said.

A motorcycle officer stopped the SUV on Las Vegas Boulevard near the Wynn Las Vegas resort at around 11:30 p.m.

A crowd quickly gathered in the area, and Hilton was taken into the Wynn hotel to "keep her safe" during the initial investigation, according to Officer Marcus Martin.

According to Sheahan, Hilton pulled a tube of lip balm out of her purse, and with it fell a bindle of cocaine in a plastic bag right into plain view of officers.

Both Hilton and Waits were later booked at the Clark County Jail.

Hilton was released early Saturday morning, according to Watch Commander Lt. Wayne Holman.

She was on Twitter shortly after her release.

Hilton tweeted: "In bed watching Family Guy. Love this show.! So hilarious! Stewie is my favorite :) love his accent." She followed that with", Going to bed. Sweet dreams everyone. Xoxo Paris :)"

Waits posted $2,000 bail and was expected to be released Saturday.

He's facing misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to his attorney Richard Schonfeld.

Schonfeld said he was "troubled by the circumstances" leading to the arrest, but declined to elaborate.

"I am gathering facts, but I caution people not to rush to judgment," Hilton's attorney, David Chesnoff, told The Associated Press Saturday morning.

Court dates for Hilton and Waits were not immediately available.

Neither Hilton's manager nor her publicist have commented.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger also declined to comment Saturday.

If convicted of a low-grade felony, Hilton would receive probation. Any violation of that probation would be punishable by one to four years in jail.

The arrest came just days after a knife-wielding man tried to break into Hilton's Sherman Oaks home.

Nathan Lee Parada, 31, is facing felony burglary charges in the Tuesday incident.

Hilton was arrested this summer after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on suspicion of possession of marijuana. The case was then dropped at a midnight court hearing.

She pleaded no contest in 2007 to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail. She served just 23 of those days.

Hilton is most famous for her tabloid exploits and reality TV series "The Simple Life." She has appeared in the films "Bottoms Up," "The Hottie & the Nottie" and "House of Wax."

Waits and his twin brother, Jesse, are managing partners of the Tryst Nightclub inside Wynn Las Vegas, Drai's after hours club at Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon, and XS The Nightclub at Wynn's Encore resort

 I love the tweet afterwards.

I think it's important to note that it was NOT her purse.

So then is she a purse snatcher? Does she use random people's lip balm?

Let my ass even LOOK like I'm on cocaine. I'll be in jail so fast. -_-

According to Sheahan, Hilton pulled a tube of lip balm out of her purse, and with it fell a bindle of cocaine in a plastic bag right into plain view of officers..

...but she knew right where to get someone else's lip balm out of that purse, and then proceeded to use that person's lip balm.

If it's not her purse will she tell who's it was?

And how much will it cost her to pay someone to say it was theirs?

And will her own purse be found? She must want it back......

I don't think she used the lip balm. Thank you for bringing that up. And there's no indication that she knew right where the lip balm was. If anything, it's the opposite. If it was her purse and she knew where the lip balm was, she would also know where the cocaine was, right? So the last thing she would do is fish around in that area. I think I'm going to email her lawyer and point this out.

About telling whose purse it was, that's another interesting point. I wonder if she carries ID? Wouldn't really matter though, if her ID was in the purse. She probably picked it up accidentally and someone else has her bag, as Dunya suggests.

thats stupid. even if you and someone else have the exact same purse, a girl knows her purse and i would know if i had another girls purse. when lindsay was caught with cocaine in her pocket, didnt she say they werent her pants? these girls need to come up with better excuses.

She did know she didn't have her purse. That's why she said "that's not my purse."

I have to pee.

Hi Paris! Everything's going to be okay. :thumb:

Another interesting thing; she gets her lawyer to spring her early Saturday, but leaves her boyfriend in jail to post his own bail later in the day.

Paris Hilton 'extremely embarrassed' as police searched SUV, report says

August 31, 2010 | 7:27 am
Paris Hilton was "extremely embarrassed" after Las Vegas police pulled her SUV over Friday night and allegedly discovered cocaine in a purse she was carrying, according to a police report.

Police said they pulled over Hilton's vehicle because they smelled marijuana coming from it. When they did so, a crowd gathered, with some taking pictures.

Hilton was "extremely embarrassed, due to all the people taking pictures of her," the report said.

Police allege they found 0.8 grams of cocaine in a purse she was carrying. Hilton denied that the purse was hers but said other items in it, including asthma medication, credit cards and $1,300 in cash, were hers, according to a police report.

Hilton was arrested with her boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub operator Cy Waits, who was driving the black SUV stopped by police at 11:22 p.m. Friday.

Hilton is expected to be charged with felony drug possession by Clark County prosecutors, based on the police report.

Hilton and Waits were stopped near the Wynn Hotel, where a crowd gathered as officers prepared to search the Cadillac Escalade for narcotics, according to the report. Hilton told the officer she needed to use the bathroom and was escorted into the hotel.

Lt. Dennis Flynn of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Hilton carried the purse into the hotel, and he had her place it on a table in a security room. As they waited for a female officer to arrive to help with the search, Hilton asked for her purse to get lip balm.

"As she began to open it, I saw a small bindle of what I believed to be cocaine in a clear baggy begin to fall from the purse and into my hand," Flynn wrote. "I then immediately took the purse and dropped the bindle back on the top," waiting for another officer to witness the recovery.

The lieutenant asked "Hilton whose cocaine it was, and she said she had not seen it and" thought it was gum, he wrote in the report.

Hilton told him she borrowed the purse, but the cash, asthma medication, credit cards and Zig-Zag cigarette rolling papers inside were hers, Flynn said.

She allegedly told Flynn that the cosmetics in the purse were not hers. Flynn noted that Zig-Zags are typically used to roll marijuana cigarettes.

Hilton's attorney, David Chesnoff, urged people not to "rush to judgment."

"This matter will be dealt with in the courts, not in the media, and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law," he said in a statement.

Waits was booked on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.

His attorney, Richard Schonfeld, says the two are innocent and the facts will exonerate them.

They found "$1,300 in cash"? Is that all she's charging these days?
