"On the southern San Mateo County coast, Año Nuevo is the site of the largest mainland breeding colony of the northern elephant seal."
I arranged my schedule today to get home before noon. Grabbed the family and headed for the coast. Ended up being in the 70's and clear. My wife and I haven't been here in 10 years. I like coming home sometimes and just putting the finger down on a map somewhere near us and just going.
Pano of the beach, here we spent most of the afternoon.
There are so many unique and isolated beaches between San Francisco and Santa Cruz that you cant go wrong for a little adventure that you won't find at the others.
The beach is a hike from parking. That's why we had it pretty much to ourselves. A couple hours playing and the sun felt great.
I had checked the tide schedules and it was on its way out when we found some little tide pools with a lot of sea urchins. The barnacles are pretty cool and covered everything.
We got 4 miles hiking in with going to see the molting humongous elephant seals. There was probably 25 or so on the beach. Three deer jumped in the photo as I was taking it.
I, like any person, can start my days by rushing around. Even today, when I got back to the house to get the family, I was tentative at best. But I knew it would be beautiful so worth the attempt. I know the kids and my wife love this stuff. It's all good when you are driving back and she tells me that she is happy and thanks me for the day. Well, I know the kids loved it, I could hardly muster them to leave.
