Morrissey Central "OPEN LETTER TO JOHNNY MARR." (January 25, 2022)

This is not a rant or an hysterical bombast. It is a polite and calmly measured request: Would you please stop mentioning my name in your interviews?

Would you please, instead, discuss your own career, your own unstoppable solo achievements and your own music?

If you can, would you please just leave me out of it?

The fact is: you don’t know me. You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings. Yet you talk as if you were my personal psychiatrist with consistent and uninterrupted access to my instincts. We haven’t known each other for 35 years - which is many lifetimes ago. When we met you and I were not successful. We both helped each other become whatever it is we are today. Can you not just leave it at that? Must you persistently, year after year, decade after decade, blame me for everything … from the 2007 Solomon Islands tsunami to the dribble on your grandma’s chin ?

You found me inspirational enough to make music with me for 6 years. If I was, as you claim, such an eyesore monster, where exactly did this leave you? Kidnapped? Mute? Chained? Abducted by cross-eyed extraterrestrials? It was YOU who played guitar on ‘Golden Lights’ - not me.

Yes, we all know that the British press will print anything you say about me as long as it’s cruel and savage. But you’ve done all that. Move on. It’s as if you can’t uncross your own legs without mentioning me. Our period together was many lifetimes ago, and a lot of blood has streamed under the bridge since then. There comes a time when you must take responsibility for your own actions and your own career, with which I wish you good health to enjoy. Just stop using my name as click-bait. I have not ever attacked your solo work or your solo life, and I have openly applauded your genius during the days of ‘Louder than bombs’ and ‘Strangeways, here we come’, yet you have positioned yourself ever-ready as rent-a-quote whenever the press require an ugly slant on something I half-said during the last glacial period as the Colorado River began to carve out the Grand Canyon. Please stop. It is 2022, not 1982.

Enjoyed some hearty morning laughs from this. Honestly, it feels like a lifetime even since Marr’s bashing began. M has been incredibly patient.

Would You Please Stop Mentioning My Name? is the SNS-era Morrissey song waiting to be written.

‘Keep my name out of your mouth’?

Actually, Morrissey said ....

‘It is a polite and calmly measured request: Would you please stop mentioning my name in your interviews?’

See, it's the press putting words in both of their mouths.

He doesn't have to ban all smiths questions, he can asked them not to ask about morrissey specifically.

Moz (-=) has been making interviews for many years where he doesnt even discuss the Smiths at all; how come :handpointright::guardsman::handpointleft: cant do the same FFS? discuss all the great solo stuff hes done (-🤥-) and some of his other projects like when he went on tv with 'billie eilish' where it seemed he was up on some roof.😑
or that cometic video where he and his compadres were bouncing in some beat up fiat pinto punto :hammer:
those are some real highlightes he can focus on:hammer:

Are you saying that Marr should just take the credit for the Smiths and never mention Morrissey? I think it's good that he mentions him in context. Marr seems very proud of the Smiths.
No, I don't think he needs to do that. He can ask them to not ask specific questions about him like "do you speak to each other?". In context sure he can mention him, but he doesn't need to mention his name all the time otherwise it will be seen as "taking all the credit".

Correct, he doesn't need to speak about them. But he is entitled to do so.

If you take another look, you'll notice that Stereogum didn't quote Morrissey, they paraphrased him.

Unfortunately, I don't think Moz was smiling when he wrote it. He lost his sense of humor a long time ago...
Nope it's funny as hell and I reckon he sat back and thought 'well done fella' once he'd finished it.

Well, what do you think Johnny Marr will be remembered for?

The Healers, or The Queen Is Dead?

The records he made with The Cribs, or Meat Is Murder?
I agree, both Morrissey and Marr have left an amazing legacy in the Smiths. Truly the highlight of both their careers. It’s for that reason i think Marr has earned the right to bitch about Morrissey as much as he likes. Imagine what could have been if it wasn’t for egos and tantrums.

Johnny Marr is a very smart guy who does not cause drama for the sake of it or even to promote himself. Morrissey is a sad bitter old diva who is obviously obsessed with Marr and the past.

Maybe you’re right. And it’s a shame Morrissey didn’t bitch about Marr in his interviews from the beginning of his solo years.

Well, we wouldn’t have had such great albums as Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, Vauxhall, etc,etc ...

It's sad that two people who once were best friends end up like this but one thing is true and that's the fact that Morrissey has never said anything bad about JM in interviews, he never even mentions him.

I don't blame Johnny much for it, it's probably mostly the press asking him about Morrissey but sometimes he seems to fall too easily into this trend of 'let's slag Morrissey off just for the sake of it'.

Sad
Tobias totally sucks, he belongs in a Vegas lobby cover band!

Honestly, I think it's superb! :::chef's kiss:::

The Golden Lights burn is my favorite. 😂

Also gotta love a good ice age metaphor. :clapping::clapping:

I feel bad that Morrissey had to write this. He is unfairly treated by the press and is accused of being things that he is not. Morrissey is always accused of being the bad guy. I think he just felt it was time to defend himself. I`m glad he did just that.
