tell us about the last Film you saw

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

I watched Of Freaks And Men for the first time in ages last night. I still love it even though at times it's a bit hard to follow. I love the fact that it's filmed in sepia too.

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

Saw "Hard Labour" On BBC4 the other night. Not strictly a film, it was a 1873 "Play For Today" directed by Mike Leigh. I'd forgotten the Indian charachter was played by Ben Kingsley.

I'm hoping that it'll be on iPlayer as I wanted to watch it but fell asleep before it started.

I'm the world's worst at giving reviews and that isn't helped by the fact that I pretty much like everything. Having said that, I really enjoyed this movie and I've been a fan of Guillermo del Toro's since a good friend of mine loaned me his copy of The Devil's Backbone. If you haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, you should.

omg, i LOVE pans labyrinth, i was thinking of buying the devils backbone, is it really really good, because it sounds confusing?

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

i saw the spiderwick chronicles last night, ok, very nice and fantastical with all the sprites/goblins but that childs acting was wooden.

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

I saw Pulp Fiction for the first time recently, I quite fancied going to bed, but my brother was appalled that I hadn't seen it and urged me to watch it.
Really enjoyed it.

It's really, really good. Worth the purchase. If you liked Pan's Labyrinth, you'll like Devil's Backbone. And if you don't, you can yell at me after you watch it. :)

Happy-Go-Lucky (dir: Mike Leigh 2008)

Possibly the British film of the year, Leigh's latest is a comedy of young British people in London.
I found the heroine, a primary school teacher Poppy is initially bit childish, but in the end her character is likeable (maybe our hattie's like Poppy?).
The friendship between Poppy and her flatmate Zoe, relationship of Poppy and her sisters are very realistic and believable.
The funniest part is Poppy and her driving instractor Scott who is developing feeling for her. I used to have a landlord who was a driving instractor, I know what is like to be one.
I could identify some of the streets they filmed which is one of the interesting features.

The cast are all superb, we'll see them more often in near future.

I just saw Knocked Up last night. From what I've learned from Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen is that when you have a baby out of wedlock, the guy you're with needs to be around and, also, be responsible for the baby. And, be careful when you have "one-night stands," too. Pregnancy can be scary, but it's a HUGE responsibility!

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

knocked up was a great movie- i thought it was pretty funny, especially the scene where she gets introduced to his friends.

I watched The Counterfeiters yesterday. I'd been meaning to see it since it come out but for some reason only just got around to it.
I thought it was really good and quite different from other Holocaust related films I have seen. I suppose I can't really say I "enjoyed" it as such but I thought the camera work was great, as was the acting. I watched it on Pay Per View but I'll definitely be buying the DVD.

Vantage Point

http://www.vantagepoint.com.my/

It was pretty good. Not bad for the $1 Redbox rental

President Ashton (William Hurt) is attending a global war on terror summit in Spain. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) are two of the Secret Service agents assigned to protect him. This is the first action that Agent Barnes has been in since he took a bullet for President Ashton six-month earlier. We really dont know if Agent Barnes is up to the challenge of protecting the President. Shortly after President Ashton is escorted to the stage in the plaza by the Secret Service, he is immediately shot twice by a rifle from a window and falls to the floor. The crowd is in shock and chaos breaks out all over, especially, when bombs begin to explode. Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) is an American video-taping the event to show to his children that he was actually there at this historic event. He believes that he has the picture of the man who shot the President. Agent Barnes sees the tape and has a clue to that person. Several different people witness the event, and only through their eyes do we see the truth behind the assassination attempt.

Tovarisch: I Am Not Dead (dir: Stuart Urban 2007)

A compelling documentary of the director's father Garri, a Polish born Jew doctor who endured holocaust and the dulag, managed to escape to the West.

Garri published a book of his adventures in 1980, the film is based on his book and video diaries shot in 1992 when Garri decided to visit the former USSR to find his lost lover and retrive his KGB dossire.

The title refers to Garri's bravary that he was shot attempting to escape from prison camp crossing icy Romanian river. When he was caught he shouted "Tovarisch (comrad), I am not dead!" and punched his captor.

Garri died in 2004, the director decided to confront the truth of his father who seemed to work as a double agent of KGB.

Urban is planning to make a fictionalized film of his father's story which sounds very promising.

Very intriguing and emotional journey of an extraordinary indivisual's past.
I envy Urban having a really charismatic father.

Re: tell us about the last Film you saw.

Ma mère
directed by Christophe Honoré
based on the unfinished novel of the same name by George Bataille.

In very surreal and staccato style Honoré tells the story of a young man's "coming of age" if you will. The film was so intense and strange and I am not entirely sure I know how I feel about it. The topics of God, the mother sex and death are immense, and serve as rich black shadows looming over the characters in the film. There were also moments of very dark humour, I think...
I guess I dont really know what the hell it was about! Which I liked, it gives me something to ponder.
Has anyone else seem it?

I have decided Isabelle Huppert is one of my favourite actresses, following her performance in this and The Piano Teacher.

Honore's first feature "17 times of Cecile Cassard" is a gem.
