Xmas NME 1988, Smiths Quiz questions 1 - 25

Sheridan Whiteside

Sweet and Tender Hooligan
Xmas 1988 NME ran a ultimate Smiths quiz which was 50 questions about the band.

First prize was a gold Hatful of Hollow disc (Mike Joyces one) and 2nd prize was a huge Rank canvas.

One girl was the only person to answer all questions, so she got both prizes!

Would be a pain in the arse to scan and upload, so I will just type the questions.

I don't get this reference.

And I can't possibly remember all of the trivia related to run-out grooves, cover stars, and sleeve notes--we 'Mercans didn't have those things.

...I think it refers to an incident where someone threw a Raw sausage at Morrissey onstage, with the words "Meat Is Murder" written on it.
Further rumours/reports quoted Morrissey as saying he bit into it, as he was actually singing the word "Murder" ( ...I could be wrong on that though....)

What are the three songs which feature bicycles? I have been thinking, but I can only think of two...

Thank you! I thought of stop me because of the video, but I couldn't remember if lyrics said anything about a bicycle.

"I was delayed, I was way-laid
An emergency stop, I smelt the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar And the pain was enough to make
A shy, bald, Buddhist reflect
And plan a mass murder
Who said lied I'd to her?
Oh, who said I'd lied because I never? I never!
Who said I'd lied because I never?"

...doesn't use the word 'bicycle' but refers to a bicycle crossbar.

I've done the same thing myself when my left foot slipped off the pedal in the wet and I crashed down on the cross bar. Bloody hurt I can tell you :tears:. And funnily enough I'm shy and bald too, but not Buddhist.
