Hot Press Review - "I Am Not A Dog On A Chain" (5 Stars out of 10)

Hot Press Review- review indicates great album but looks like lost stars for political views

MORRRISEY – I AM NOT A DOG ON A CHAIN- BMG
5 Stars/10
RESPECTABLE RETURN FROM
INDIE ICON ISN'T ENOUGH TO
ESCAPE BLACK HOLE OF HIS
POLITICAL VIEWS
Morrissey has a new album and fans are confused as to how they should
feel. I Am Not A Dog On A Chain is
solid late-period Moz, with robust
production by his latest ongoing
collaborator Joe Chiccarelli (Spoon,
The Shins, Tori Amos).
Buuuut there is still the sticky
issue of Stephen Patrick's well-
documented far right views. He
popped up on the Jimmy Fallon
show wearing a badge advertising
the For Britain party (headbangers
shunned by Nigel Farage for their
extremism). And he has accused
London Mayor Sadiq Khan of
being unable to "talk properly".
To all of this we can now add his
one-way feud with The Guardian, as
the
trumpeted by his new line of "f***
The Guardian" merch (an actual
thing).
How do you get all that out
of your head whilst grooving to
his thoroughly agreeable new
record, which Moz himself has not
inaccurarely hailed as "the very
best of me"? It's impossible which
is why, as a Smiths diehard, you
may undergo a succession of mild
out-of-body experiences as the top-
drawer jangle pop of Jim Jim Falls'
and single 'Bobby, Don't You Think
They Know?' washes over you.
His humour has weathered the
years, at least. "Time will mould
you and craft you," he croons
darkly. "But when you're looking
away it will slide up and shaft you."
That's the opening line to closer,
'My Hurling Days Are Done'. It's
in the rich Morrissey tradition of
wry dirges and we can always do
with more indie icons referencing
the greatest sport in the world.
But it's so very odd enjoying this
album knowing the opinions of the
increasingly marginalised figure
behind it.

I think the question is this music good and do I want to listen to and support an artist are different questions and only the first belongs in a music review. I read reviews to hear about music not how this guy feels about morrisseys politics and how it makes him feel about morrisseys music

How can he say "Moz himself has not inaccurarely hailed as "the very best of me"? " and rate the album 5/10....does that mean TQIDis a 5/10 album???....To me that line tells me we're in for most likely one final great album as beyond the BMG deal cant see any other label going with him.....Pity BMG aint pushing the album at all given no airplay, playlisting or exclusives of any of the three fine lead songs released...not even a hint of a 7" single release...I wonder was the whole Its Over situation fed into this.

Yes, a final great album, for those who are not overly allergic to his misguided political views. That's basically my summary of that poorly written unoriginal pièce. Well I am glad he is leaving on a high note artistically.

No. But that is his opinion. It’s really very, very funny that you said that about independent thought as you clearly only agree with Morrissey. You don’t believe the things Morrissey believes, but you agree with him anyway. You have no opinion that isn’t his. It must be absolutely awful being you. Best of luck, Acton xoxo
I'm just looking for an intelligent review that shows that the journalist is competent and honours his craft. They could give Moz album zero out of 10 and I'd still enjoy and respect the review if it showed that the writer wasn't on autopilot. That Hotpress review couldn't have taken longer than 3 minutes to write. These guys need to take some pride in their work instead of evacuating their talent-voids onto the page.

Such a stupid review really. I can imagine how Moz keeps his subversive political views when he faces permanently this kind of crap.
And for such a "journalist", it is a blessing: he doe not need to understand the music, to have good ears whatsoever: he just has to talk about politics and his "review" is written without any effort - copy/paste from other papers is sufficient....

So much defensiveness from the usual sources. Honestly, can’t any of you handle opinions not approved by you? Some need to venture out of the echo chambers they spend way too much time in, if their egos are ever to become less fragile.

‘My hurling days are done’ ?

So despite the overwhelmingly positive review of the MUSIC, the album gets 5/10 because of POLITICS. It is literally a review of Morrissey's politics: the music is good but the politics are bad, so the average of those things is a 5/10. Since when is an album's overall rating determined that way?

Where’s the review...?

my hurling days are done, the childrens choir is back, one listen and that's it,at this rate we will have heard nearly all of the album.sounds good.

How on earth can the writer imagine that it's a "one-way feud with The Guardian"? Has he not seen the endless column inches devoted to their vendetta against Morrissey. It seems as though only Jeremy Corbyn is now attacked more frequently by The Guardian.

"Morrissey has a new album and fans are confused as to how they should
feel. "

I don't know anyone who's confused. Where are these confused fans? Far more likely that it's wishful thinking on the part of The Guardian and their ilk (not to mention our own Peter F) that punters will review anything (and everything) apart from the music and the gigs.

snipped nonreview

Look, I'm an independent that leans heavily left but i don't give a flying fvck about Moz being a little right of the spectrum. He's not Donnie Chump right. He's allowed to have an opinion. Either review the actual album or start a far left blog.

Confused? I'm as happy as Larry that Moz is politically sane and not scared to admit it. If you have an opinion these days you're supposed to hang your head in shame and keep silent. Never!

The man should be knighted for his comments alone.

Look who the actual fk cares?
Buy the fkr & make up your own mind about it. These reviews, much like the skinny drivel which he pedals, have no affect or influence on me at all. So carry on denouncing whoever skinny...you're wasting your time. I'll make up my own mind.

I wonder if Morrissey can do as well as an act that sells out the whole venue, not just some of it, and who look like getting a no.1 album?
