Morrissey related films

The Alchemist

How many times I've saved myself
I'd be interested to hear about the films you've all seen which are related in any way to Morrissey's interests
(or those that he has specifically referenced or mentioned)

I'm quite interested in older cinema (mainly French poetic realism, French new wave, British kichen sink, the golden age of Hollywood)

I also enjoy newer independent British cinema.

What are your favourites?

Always open to recommendations.

Happy to kick things off:

Pépé le Moko (1937)
Brighton Rock (1947)
The Blue Lamp (1950)
Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
Room at the Top (1958)
The 400 Blows (1959)
Look Back in Anger (1959)
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960)
A Taste Of Honey (1961)
A Kind Of Loving (1962)
This Sporting Life (1963)
Poor Cow (1967)
Kes (1969)
Romper Stomper (1992)
Nil By Mouth (1997)

Of those, the L-Shaped Room and Billy Liar are two of the next films I'm planning to see.

Withnail is brilliant, and I'll check out the others - thanks.

I re-watched those two not that long ago. TLR really holds up. Billy Liar I actually found a bit annoying. It’s strange, I used to love it.

Funny how things can feel on a re-watch sometimes.

Some I manage to locate on YouTube, but with others I struggle.

Many I watched back in the days of DVD's, but some of the specialist foreign films could be quite expensive to buy.

I really like that you can watch things on the BFI website for free:

Open Culture is a good resource too:

Thanks! I wonder if the BFI player works where I am, or if it’s the British isles only. Looking forward to delving into Open Culture, though!

I hope it does work outside of the UK, as I'd like to recommend it to my dad and he lives in Spain.

I only discovered Open Culture recently, but it seems to work well (y)

I don’t think it does, you need to use a VPN. You can get a free week trial of their Amazon Prime channel, which I found was enough time to watch anything they have worth watching.

A penfriend letter was shared somewhere from 1978/1979 and Morrissey had said the only thing worth seeing on tv around that time had been Christmas in Connecticut. I must have been watching it at the same time, and had enjoyed it greatly. (There was a remake later).

Thanks for bringing that to my attention with the background. I've heard it mentioned before, but I've not yet seen it.

Love this! Thanks for sharing!

As it was Good Friday yesterday, I decided to finally watch Pasolini’s The Gospel of Matthew. It was absolutely brilliant. Could very well be the best Pasolini film I’ve ever seen. I’m biased, of course, but still! A still (…) from the film has been used as a concert backdrop by Morrissey.

Have you seen teorema? That's my favourite, the gospel according to Matthew is second.
