How & when did Moz meet Bolan? He died when Moz was still 18 years old sitting in his bedroom writing letters to Sounds & NME........ I know that T Rex was his first ever gig because it was mine too (Belle Vue, June 1972), but it seems unlikely that he would've shaken his 13 year old hand.
"At last I am face to face with Marc Bolan – as his flutterers flutter about him in the lobby of the Midland Hotel in Manchester. I am nothing and look nothing.
‘Could I have your autograph?’, I ask softly.
‘Oooh, no,’ he says, and slowly walks away to nowhere – unavailable to the outside world. I nod with all the shyness of adolescent modesty, as if understanding the catastrophic trouble I had brought upon him by asking. His new album will enter the chart at number 50, and mental illness is artistic activity is mental illness is artistic activity. On this day of buried disappointments, the showbiz version of Marc Bolan probably relishes the socially trapped condition, yet there is no one here but I – a member of his audience to whom he once turned for confirmation of what he was, and I gave to him as he gave to me. Ah, but not today – shadow close, swift as a swallow ..."

I believe he's on about the Apollo gig, '77 which makes Morrissey ~18.

No Sandie Shaw? What was their fallout about?
I know that in 1984 Sandie singing Hand in Glove was one of Mozzer’s proudest moments ever ! She was his absolute idol!

No Sandie Shaw?...
I think it's complicated. He obviously worshipped her but she was ringside when things were going pear-shaped with Johnny. I remember reading in her book when she was doing an album with practically all the musicians around M at the time - except Johnny. She bumped into Johnny at the studio bar and he bitterly hissed something like "I suppose HE's writing for you?" or something horrid.

what mad man ranks people they've met?
The sort of man who regularly lists his favourite gigs in order at the end of a tour, ranks his own discography, and posts encyclopedic lists of his every chart position.

It's not a criticism, but I'd be amazed if Morrissey wasn't on the autistic spectrum, as he displays so many traits.

According to his autobiography, he was annoyed as she didn't offer to buy him dinner after Hand in Glove as a thank you, so he binned her.

Another one of his lyric mishearings, It’s actually….

The Travelling Tragition

‘Shadow cloak swift as a swallow

Pantaloon down in the hollow
Dancing, his voice like a cloud
In the death of my night

Awful eyes, black Persian beggar
Harlequinesque, hair plaited heather
Stepping so lightly
A sprite in the house of my sight …’

- Tyrannosaurus Rex

Joan Collins and Anthony Newley were not the happy couple they look in that photo - see about 30 minutes into this recent interview with Louis Theroux.

One of Joan Collins' earliest appearances is in a Moz film recommendation, Turn the Key Softly, made in 1953, in which she is already sporting puffy shoulder sleeves, which became a trademark -

The song Granada by Al Martino is on Morrissey's Supreme 13 single compilation -

Is the Department S clip there for the Peter Wyngarde listing and Oscar Wilde mention, or is there more?
Yeah. I don't know if I heard some gossip or read it somewhere. Somewhere between 1981 & 1988 seems quite likely - but I suppose it could have been at a 70s gig?!?
Me too. I'm sure I read not long ago about them knowing each other; will have a think... Meanwhile, a colourful article about Manchester in the 1980s mentioning The Smiths and much more - https://confidentials.com/manchester/this-is-manchester-70-photos-from-the-1980s

Re: meeting Nico - vague details:

"I meet her twice in unlit corners of Manchester danceterias, her frozen eyes wide amongst masses of deep black garments. The voice is a deadly frost that speaks only in mind-boggling twister-teasers, and you feel certain that Nico is in there somewhere, amongst the creases. The body is eighty-five parts anti-freeze and fifteen parts first-degree aitch. It is said that Nico introduced her teenage son to heroin, and, as he lay in a hospital bed having overdosed, she rigged up portable recording equipment in order to capture his last breath. Nico herself will be dead at 49, having fallen from her bicycle. Her singing voice is the sound of a body falling downstairs, and she speaks as if the hangman’s hands are at her throat. One drizzly night at a crib called Rafters, Nico hoists herself onstage in preparation. Her fortress harmonium stands center-stage like a battleship, ready to wheeze vaporized tones like the last harpooned humpback. Nico aims for her stool but misses and jigs herself sideways. She readjusts and begins the foot-pumping process of awakening her harmonium. There is no ‘hello’, and no ‘goodbye’. I treasure her four studio albums, none of which contain the faintest hint of hope."

With the loss of the Autobiography online index, on my things to do list is an Autobiography named references addition to relevant Wiki topics. That is a vast undertaking though, so will keep.

Interesting list (no Sparks?) - almost sounds like he's reminding himself of the good bits of the whole fame ride, the perks. I find it a bit sad that he 'prizes' these brief encounters with the rich and famous but doesn't reflect on the fact that you could write a list just as long of good friends that he lost, people he fell out with or 'exiled' without a word, etc... that is the stuff that people remember about someone, not whether you stood in a corridor next to Marc Bolan when you were 18.

that would be extremely useful. (y)

Possibly not, as when he said in the US interview that he had met everyone he wanted to, he did say that it wasn't the end of the story in terms of the question he had been asked.

Didn't he then say something like 'unless I'm assassinated...' ?
