HELLO HELL

April 19, 2021

"This is my first comment (and hopefully my last) on The Simpsons' episode - which I know has enraged many people. The hatred shown towards me from the creators of The Simpsons is obviously a taunting lawsuit, but one that requires more funding than I could possibly muster in order to make a challenge. Neither do I have a determined business squad of legal practitioners ready to pounce. I think this is generally understood and is the reason why I am so carelessly and noisily attacked. You are especially despised if your music affects people in a strong and beautiful way, since music is no longer required to. In fact, the worst thing you can do in 2021 is to lend a bit of strength to the lives of others. There is no place in modern music for anyone with strong emotions. Limitations have been placed on art, and no label will sign an artist who might answer back. Anyway, forgive me, we all know this because we can see how music - and the world in general, has become a mesmerizing mess, and we must let it go spinning along unbearably because free speech no longer exists. We all know this. In my case, nothing about my life has ever been matter-of-fact; nothing about my songs has ever been matter-of-fact … so why would they now be? Since my very first interview several decades ago I have lived with horrible accusations to such a degree that it is generally understood that 'this is how we write about Morrissey'. In other words, I'm quite used to it. I've had enough horror thrown at me that would kill off a herd of bison. Accusations usually come from someone with a crazed desire for importance; they don't operate at a very high level. Writing for The Simpsons, for example, evidently requires only complete ignorance. But all of these things are too easy for me to say. In a world obsessed with Hate Laws, there are none that protect me. Often, the scandal sheets (do we STILL refer to them as 'news'papers?) attempt to psychologically wound an artist, and then, hopefully stir up enough hatred against that artist so that s/he is physically wounded. False theories of race are now the most common (and boring) aspect of all criticism, and will continue to be so until accusations of racism are in themselves illicit. I have watched 'Smiths fans' being attacked by the UK press on the grounds that 'Smiths fans' are too backward to understand the person that I am; I have watched the modern Morrissey audience be ridiculed by the UK press with the belief that they, too, couldn't possibly know who I am, and I have lost several high-profile friends because they could no longer live with the night and day harassment from British journalists who are suicidally anguished because they cannot urge the people around me to drum up tell-tale incidents of racism. This battle fatigue I face alone, although I am very grateful to the writer Fiona Dodwell for her eloquent appraisals of the victimization that now automatically associates with my name, and on which The Simpsons latest episode feasts.
People continually ask me why I do not retaliate - especially following the Sky Sports open slander. The answer is explained in the first few lines of this comment. Life is difficult and you must face it on your own, and even with the impossible-to-imagine legal artillary, everything can be repaired … except the human heart.

It is easier for me not to go on. You know I couldn't last."

Someone doesn’t have a clue.

Back to work, Tiny-B. You’ve got a mop to wring-out before you hit the sausages. Your boss is in a tizzy. ...and Christ knows you’re unemployable elsewhere.

Don’t f$&k it up, son. This is probably your last opportunity at a part-timer to supplement your dole.

Have you considered options beyond posting pre-school level sentiment and “stuff you think” on this site, Karen?

You’ll soon need another option.

I am LOVING this minion meltdown!!!!

Of course you're loving it, you useless tw*t.

I don't know - it's certainly not a given. He's said many things over the years that could be used to paint him in a very bad light.

We need a sticky thread (no comments allowed) containing all video, audio and magazine/website interviews of all instances of Morrissey saying racist things.

Then, if there appears to be no proof of Morrissey being racist, we can crowdsource funds for Morrissey vs Fox.

Same, same olde patter....
Nothing new...
mop... bucket .....
At this rate you’ll get us fired off here again with your repetition ....
Please say something of humour...
Please.

You think he's going to do himself in over being depicted in a bad light in a Simpsons cartoon? I guess he would think that would make a funny epitaph.
Moz you CANNOT top yourself before we've gone blazer shopping!!!!! FIRST we go blazer shopping and then we'll top ourselves together wearing our nice new blazers (mine will be red velvet, natch!) In a room full of flowers like lupe Velez tried to do!!! Deal?!

I’ve heard through the grapevine,
It’s a yesss😂

Because he's known for dramatic statements like this.
Exactly... it's almost like how could he NOT end with a melodramatic statement. A simple "over and out" or "until fate brings us together again" is just not him. In other words, ending with some mild 'best wishes' would make us suspicious. Sorry, had to go there...

I didn't watch the episode because I knew something like this could happen. Actually I never was a fan of the show. It never was my kind of "humor".
People I like may be hurt but I won't waste a minute watching the deed. Truth is that wit deserted The Simpsos many seasons ago. But people seem afraid of the truth in many levels.

If he had a lawsuit he could win he would have no problem obtaining legal representation. But "The Simpsons" is protected by the First Amendment. This is free speech and as parody it is protected.
While the character is obviously based on Morrissey some things are changed, such as the idea that he is a recluse who no one has seen in thirty years, and the idea of a cash grab which they show as a reunion with The Smiths.

As others said most of the show was pretty complimentary and based on the mythology around Morrissey's early image. It does rely on cliches but we're talking about a half hour cartoon aimed at a massive audience and this image is likely to be what most people know about him if they're aware of him.
Lisa's relationship with him was shown to be private and imaginary, even delusional. This seems pretty accurate. Fans do tend to feel he speaks for them and do tend to form a relationship with their own private interpretation of who he is. If you read this board you can find that your interpretations may clash with those of other fans and yet you are likely to both be just as convinced you are right.
That's not really a bad thing. It's a testament to the power of his work and his persona that he affects people strongly.
Some of his detractors here seem just as or more strongly affected by him than his most diehard fans. Can you imagine signing in every day to continue a personal crusade against him? That takes motivation.
Anyway, at the end what happens is a very coarse and basic representation of what many longtime fans have experienced and what could easily happen to someone who discovered The Smiths on "Slapify."
His current incarnation really could be a shock if you were expecting the guy singing "William, It Was Really Nothing" on Top of the Pops.

In the end though, this episode is more likely to get people to listen to his music out of curiosity and if we could track it I imagine we'd see a surge in downloads and Spotify listens. It's a whole new potential audience. The Simpsons isn't what it used to be but they still reach a lot of people. And for this to damage Morrissey that audience would have to already 1) know who he is, and 2) not have already heard the word "racist" attached to him.
I haven't watched The Simpsons in a long time and wouldn't have if this site wasn't hyping this episode. It makes it kind of mandatory to see it so you can understand what people are discussing.
On a final note The Simpsons has a reputation for "predicting the future" with everything from "President Donald Trump" to "9/11" appearing there years before it occurred in real life. So if a reunion of The Smiths does happen I guess we shouldn't be surprised.
