Morrissey Central "IRISH BL❤️❤️D" (January 18, 2024)

Everyone, particularly the left, should support free speech.
Yes, but one shouldn’t ignore the fact that the line between healthy free speech and verbal abuse is sometimes a little blurry.

I'm so disappointed in Morrissey.
If he was going for a song pun title, it really should have been 'Viva Hate Speech'.

Sticks and stones.
I don’t know. There are laws to be respected. And human beings. If you (not YOU specifically) can’t express an opinion without being abusive, then maybe you should try a little harder and learn to express yourself more eloquently.

This is one of those times I am very happy to be an American and don't have to deal with little snowflakes and their hurt feelings, and a government backing them up. The left tries to limit our speech here, but the second amendment can stop that from going too far.

The department has stressed that the legislation is “not a new or radical departure in Irish law” and said it wants to be clear about what is, and what isn’t, intended with the bill.

For example, it says:

  • “You will still be able to offend other people or express views which make others uncomfortable”
  • “You will still be able to debate and discuss issues regarding protecting characteristics”
  • “The new law includes defences for reasonable and genuine contributions to literary, artistic, political, scientific, religious or academic discourse, and fair and accurate reporting”
  • “You can be offensive, say things that make others uncomfortable, have full and robust debate”
  • “You cannot incite hatred or violence against others”
  • “You cannot use extreme forms of speech to deliberately and recklessly encourage or incite other people to hate or cause harm to a person because of your views”
Freedom of expression is a protected right under both the Irish constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Seems to be a fairly simple update to a 1989 "hate law" that also takes account of the internet instead of just "broadcasts"

The last two points on the list should be obvious to anyone.

It is curious phenomena how so many contemporary (ie formerly silent on the issue, and for years) free speech advocates seem to be able to last only seconds, before becoming infuriated and wanting someone banned or imprisoned, due to something said.

You could almost understand that they believe in free speech for themselves, but nobody else. I currently read The Telegraph, and it’s a ‘norm’ there; simultaneously hilarious, and a dark omen.

Morrissey might, from an intellectual standpoint, do better to challenge the widespread hypocrisy—rampant on the right of politics at the moment. I hope he still cares about all things intellectual.

Great replacement theory & it's not even Noon in the UK.

If Morrissey wants to kill his career by promoting the far right on Central - then I think he should clarify.

The neo-Nazis can have him & everyone else can draw a line in their memories between what what he used to be & what he is now.

Because he's wasting his money & time limping on like this.

Well, I forgot to put neo-Nazis on the list, we should make a Solo drinking game, or at least a bingo card

Ive heard of left and right stuff (I don't live in a cave, I swear) but I really don't remember what each side contains. I keep forgetting. This post isn't my asking what each side is, because I'll probably just forget again, plus I don't care. I easily forget about things that don't matter to me. Throw it in the trash, I say. I don't like any of this division, and I will not waste my time with it. There's too much depth to things that others think are simply "good" or "bad", well I don't think anything is that simple. On that note, I don't like the idea of blocking any speech anywhere because it's our most primal human right is to say what we want to say, think what we want to think... Almost like breathing and eating (well, the thinking part is like breathing and eating. We can think without saying... I do it often.)

Love❤️, peace✌🏻 and harmony✨. (Maybe in the next world?)

It’s not really a ‘primal human right’, it’s something that has to be fought for: it itself is open to criticism—through the logic of its own tenets.

I completely agree.
Plus, issues like these keep being presented as a left vs right issue and they are simply not.
They are complex like you say, and especially in the time we live in now.
The world is a very different place to the 20th century fight over left wing socialism vs right wing conservatism.
What is a more interesting way to define a persons beliefs is whether they want to control vs those who want to be free.

Most people have a range of views that cannot be so easily categorised, but people like Malarkey hate any kind of nuance or complexity, to them you follow what they believe to the letter, any deviation from this and you are a bigot.
I think it was @gashonthenail who said we now live in a world that is post left/right and I agree.

I don't think it's you, things have become very blurry

Is L and R stuff new? I just don't remember ever hearing about it even like, as little as 10 years ago.

I don't know, seems like a lot of things, L and R stuff included, is made to just put us into little boxes for containment. We are wild animals that have been caged for too long.
